Miguel has it correct, charcoal canister was connected to OEM air cleaner housing via flexible tubing. David
From the close up pictures, looks like you do have the correct OEM matching upper/lower bar halves, regarding the welded threaded insert, perhaps...
I installed the grease fittings way back when, made it so I could grease/lube the bushings which lasted over 35 years before I went to hydraulic...
How is that threaded insert attached and have you tried to remove it? David
Looks like someone may have modified the engine side, did not have that threaded "insert", also you have a mis-match, the engine side, lower bar...
I had the same problem many years ago, I ended up fabricating a spacer between the carb and air cleaner bottom, not sure if these spacers are...

They where a direct bolt in, spacer/washers (supplied) where used between the inner fender/hinge to make sure hood/hinges are correctly aligned....
