The shock comes out first. Unbolt it from the upper control arm, then from the upper shock mount (in the engine bay). Then you can feed a spring...
Just add some additional padding (dynapad or similar) over the hump to fill the void.
I'm in agreement with these guys. My Hookers are close on the drivers side, but they bolt up fine and still have about an 1/8" of breathing room.
They tie the front and rear frame rails together to increase the strength and decrease the flex, twist, and deflection of the unibody design....
