The starter has to be wired the way Ford did it in the later cars . If it worked the shortcut way do you think they would have wasted the money...
I think the fan belt might have loosened up.Check your voltmeter at idle then slowly rev the engine and see if the voltage goes up and then starts...

I run the Duraspark with just the MSD6 box and MSD coil on the 460 in my 56 F100. Works great.
