See thread http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?p=278169&posted=1#post278169 for details. Part number is NAPA AL162. Use with stock distributor, stock rotor, and HEI boots.
Doesn't look like the large diameter HEI cap. Those caps require a longer, taller rotor to reach the cap terminals and an adaptor to mate the large cap to the smaller diameter distributor.
The cap shown is for the early Duraspark ignition system, before they went to the large cap and adapter. 74 and 75 I believe, before they found the cross firing problem due to the increased voltage output of the coil. Thus the advent of the cap adapter and the large cap to increase the air gap between poles to prevent cross fire. All you have to do if you need the extra room for some reason is get a cap, rotor and wires for a 74 and install them.
I am using this as a direct swap on my 74. I am using the 74 rotor, but HEI wires (or at least wires that snap on and have a 90 degree boot) so the wires don't stick up all over the place like this... I want the wires to exit the cap parallel to the hood, and I want a firm "SNAP" when I plug them into the distributor, same as I get with the spark plugs. I have had a couple work themselves out and cause me a lot of trouble with trying to track down the miss (didn't go for the obvious cause first ).
I hope that by giving me the that this is a good thing. Coming from you, you are probably poking fun at my wimpy gear
I don't know what you mean... When I got the car, I did a tune up and just replaced the 30 yr old stock coil with this one from HiLo/O'Reilly. New wires, new distributor cap, new plugs, new points, and rotor. This coil was supposed to be a little more powerful than the stock but I don't think it is more than 25% or so stronger. Currently, running stock rotor, 8mm wires, shorty spark plugs, that Accel coil, Pertronix, and have that new HEI-type cap on. Haven't driven it like this yet (with the new HEI cap) because I only put on half the wires yesterday. I will put the rest on today, and might take it for a spin. I have started it with this setup with the old yellow wires and it ran fine.
Just swapped the points to Pertronix. This cap will still work with stock points. I would highly recommend anyone still using points to lose them and add pertronix (or similar). Just one wire, and lose the hassle of adjusting points forever. Starts faster, never needs adjustment, runs smoother...
Here is a pic of the cap installed with new wires. They have a 90 degree boot on one end for the cap, and 120 degree on the plug end. Since I need the 90 end on the plugs to clear the headers, the 120 end sticks up a little off the cap, but it looks better than the old yellow ones. Starts right up and runs nice and smooth, but still haven't taken it on the highway to test it at higher speeds. With the choke on this morning (cool front moved in :bananaman ) it ran smooth at about 1800-2000rpm before I cut it off to keep from waking the wife and neighbors.
I wanted the firm "SNAP" of the wires going on, and not just the guess that it is seated at the bottom. That is why I switched cap styles...I had a couple wiggle loose and I didn't want to mess with that happening again.
