i took a measurement from the bumper edge to the marker lite. my measurement was 3 3/4" i wanted it close but not over the lite. so i took 3 1/2/' off.
when i did mine i put two jack stands under the bumper. not touching but to support the bumper when the bolts are removed.
take the two mount bolts off each side of the frame. " slide " the bumper off and lay it with the mounts up. take the three nuts off the mount. now you should have what is in the pic.
measure from the inside of the plate down the mount to 3 1/2". cut the plate off as close as you can, then cut the mount off at the 3 1/2' mark. then weld the plate back on. keep it square and centered. you might want to take a measurement of where the plate is before you cut it off.
put the mounts back on the bumper.(y)
now take the rubber filler and turn it over ( bottom side up ). there is a ridge to the front. i trimed mine about 1/2' past that.
put it on, put the bumper on and you have just done the "big bumper slide":clap:any ???? just ask...frank...

Wow ... isn't it easier to just actually slide the bumper as it was intended to slide in an accident? That is what I meant when I pushed it in using the telephone pole technique. The section that you cut actually slides in and out of the mount ... although not easily. :)

 OK ... OK ... I give up! Run it into a pole is kinda harsh terminology ... More like "finesse" it into the pole ...

Edit: Sorry -- Didn't see you started a new thread under technical ... didn't mean to trash your thread. :slap:

Mine got hit by a runaway bus and that damned bumper didn't 'slide'.
The whole car did a 'slide'.
It slid half way across the parking lot with the A/T in park, up over the
    curb and into a bush.
The only thing that kept it from continuing is the bus stopped at the
    curb.
    That was April 1990.

Lonnie, can you be a little more descriptive? I know I need to go look at mine, but before I do, sorry  I would like to get a better idea what I am looking at??? Do you remove it, and then weld it back up? What keeps it in place.

Do have pic of yours by chance?

    Thanks (y)

there are several ways to do it. I altered the supports, and altered the inner supports, made new brackets and shaved the bumper bolts as well, along with sectioning the bumpers so they dont hang out so far to the sides.

glad you got it figured out frank, looks good

Well from experience I must say I have had tremendous results with cars and poles. Only one positive time. Got sideswiped by a boat, yeah a boat on a trailer. Caught the rear bumper, bent it in the middle and the left side of it was sticking out a couple foot, okay maybe a foot, budweiser has a way of stretching it further. I was pissed, the other guy didnt stop. I was freaking and then I had the bright idea of backing the car into a telephone pole. First couple of taps did nothing. Figured out I had to do at least 10 mile an hour backward but didnt trust a wooden telephone pole. Then spied a steel post, a real heavy duty one that musta been put there by the automotive gods for this explicit purpose. Well I went 10 mph backwards,, dont ask me how I knew, I left that technical stuff to budweiser back then. Wow! it pushed it right back in, then I just kinda powerbraked it backwards till it snugged it right back up to the car. Couple months later took the bumper off and had it straightened and rechromed,,,, looked great.
    Dan
disclaimer- DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!! I used to be a trained Budweiser drinker and did many many stupid things in those days.

Funny how youth, beer, and stupid are always on the same street. The stupid with the youth is enough; the beer takes it to 10th degree. There are some advantages to growing older.
