Has anyone ever put an older Cluster in a 77. The 77 reads 100 MPH. Was wanting to put a 73 model in that is available that reads 120 MPH. I was wondering if the wiring is the same & if the Speedometer would read correctly etc.. My son's 77 needs a new cluster & we can't locate a 77 cluster. Thanks, Mike
I don't know your answer, but if you do a search, I saw that topic being discussed in length. Was in the last week or two. I like the looks of the earlier one myself. I think 75 was the last year for it. Good luck Dave
There is a difference with the early and late model printed curcuit sheet that mounts on the back of the cluster. I think there is an extra curcuit added for late model economy idiot light. If idiot lights dont matter, then everything should interchange. When changing from 100 MPH to 120 MPH, don't forget to get your speedo calibrated. Ken
Dennis, You don't need to calibrate (change the plastic trans. gear)when you change the speedo from 100 MPH to 120 MPH???????? Ken
Don't know the exact years, but a cluster from a '71 Maverick would not plug into my '74 Maverick's wireing harness. The '74 plug was smaller then the 72's plug. You will probably have to take the clusters apart and and put the early guages in your '77 cluster. As far as the idiot lights, I "think" you should be able to swap the plastic film that clips into the back. Hard to explain without showing what I'm talking about... As far as I've seen, '74 was the last year of the 120 mph speedometers.
Nope. The difference is in the speedometer its self. They just have stiffer springs in the 120 movement. Its easy enough to verify. Just take a drill and hook it up to each one and run the drill full speed. It will read the same mph on both.
There is a difference with the plug. I tried to put a 74 cluster in my 73 & the plug wouldn't fit. I ended up destroying the 74 cluster, trying to cut the hole big enough. Just my 2 cents....
I went out and compared the ones I have. The early style housing has a bigger plug than the later style housings. While the "insides" may be interchangeable....the white plastic housing as well as the circuit strip is different and will not interchange.
My 75 has the 120. It also has the metal look center on the pods. My car was a "non-cat" 75, however some 75s had cats. I think that is the difference. If your car had cats, you had the later gauges... All black 100 mph and most significantly, "unleaded fuel" label on the gauges. Dave
well if you dont care about a little splicing on the wires for the back of the cluster you could just splice the plug on to the wires in your dash. might have to verify they are for the same things.
