Many of you may have noticed that not all Maverick Tail-lights are the same. I believe it is the 1970 tailights that have a bigger REVERSE lens than the 1971-1977 units. I have heard many of you discussing swapping to the early style because you prefer the look of the bigger reverse light. The early style is on the bottom.....the later style is on top in this picture. But...besides the different look....there is a physical difference as well. The later style has 2 additional screws to hold the lens on with...and these are located where the indentions are located in the lens near the reverse light. I have pointed out these indentions with the yellow arrows. While the top lens will fit any tail-light housing, the bottom lens will only fit the later style housing if you leave off the two screws. You can see the later style tail-light housing in this post . This tailight housing does not have the two screws located under and above the reverse light lens. Just something to keep in mind when you are swap meet/junkyard shopping. P.S. As a side note....both of these lens had the EXACT same part number cast into it.
The tail light bezels have a small difference too. The drainage holes on the bottom of some are holes and some are slots. Don't have any pictures but if you get anal with your car you would want them to match. You never know when you are going to be laying on the ground looking up at the difference wishing they matched.
Are the '70 lenses hard to come by? I was planning on (yikes) drilling a hole in mine to install my battery cutoff switch. My thoughts were I could always replace the lens if I wanted to remove the switch.
Here is an auction on ebay from a seller selling a pair of NOS tail-light lens. What he doesn't realize is that he has one of each...not a matching pair!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-...ewItemQQcategoryZ34207QQitemZ4579243724QQrdZ1
In that case, the passenger tail light on my car has been replaced. Must have been when it was lightly rear ended in 1980.
