I have a 1973, 302 in my 73 grabber and am hooking up a 4 speed toploader with the 1-1/16 input spline, what size clutch do I need to buy so I can replace the clutch when I install the new transmission

if u run a 157 tooth flywheel then i think you'll need an 10.5" clutch..... and i think an 11" clutch is needed for the 164 tooth

I think stock 157 is a 10" clutch... They DO make a 10.5" with the 10" bolt pattern though.

A 164t definately uses an 11", but they never came in our cars.

Do you know which bell/flywheel you have?

99% sure it is a stock flywheel for the 1973, 302 and the bell housing is whatever bellhousing mates a stock 73, 302 to a 4 speed toaploader, and the input shaft is a 10 spline.

I have replaced the starter with a stock 302 starter and it worked fine so I am going to guess that this would mean that it is a stock 157 tooth flywheel.

So what I am hearing is as long as I am running a stock flywheel and bellhousing It should be a 10 inch clutch?

It sounds like you have a stock 157t with 10" clutch.
In that case, you can use a 10" clutch, or you can use the 10.5" setup sold specifically to upgrade the 10" clutch. The aftermarket 10.5" for Fords has a dual bolt pattern on the pressure plate to fit either 10" or 11" flywheels. There are several folks here that use them.

Depends on what performance level and price range you want.

Your statement of "whatever mates a 302 and manual trans" is pretty open ended. There are a few setups made over the years that will do this, and the parts don't interchange. However, it sounds like you have it pegged.

Is your bellhousing made of aluminum or iron?
Most often, iron bells are 164t, while aluminum is usually 157t...
99% of the time, these are the materials used, but there were exceptions, so this isn't perfect. In the end, the only way to know for sure is to lay eyes on the clutch/plate assembly.

Bellhousing is aluminum. Thanks for the info. I will probably go with the 10.5 upgrade now that I am pretty sure it will fit. The reason I am asking all this is I haven't had the old tranny out yet. I am swapping out the old toploader imposter ( 3 +1 OD) and putting in a real 4 speed on Saturday at my Brother in laws house and I want to have all the parts before I get started so I can get it all done and back together on Saturday. I didn't want to have to wait until I get the tranny out to go to the parts store and buy a clutch then come back and put it in. #1 because I don't want a cheap clutch that I might get from one of the Autozone/advanced Auto stores around her might sell and #2 I just didn't want to have to stop int he middle of everything to go out and get parts.
    Thanks for the info.

If anyone else has any other info that might be helpful please post it up. My bro-in law is pretty good with this stuff but the more information I have the better I feel.

Are you getting a close or wide ratio tranny?
