The new block I'm using on the rebuild is a 302 with a triple X stamped on each side of the block that looks like this...xXx...does anyone now what this designates. Actually its embossed not stamped. So it was part of the cast.
I've seen that too on a few blocks, and have never heard of anything good/bad about them. Seems pretty common. One of 'em is in my Mustang--so far so good (knock on wood!)
Well it is bare ...The block is out of a low mileage late 70's model F-150. After boiling and shot-peening if I didn't know better I'd swear it was new.
If I'm not mistaken (I know. Like that ever happens!), the "xXx" indicates that it's a low mileage late 70's model F-150 block. You're welcome. Ho hum.
I just thought it was out of the ordinary...no more 302 blocks than I've seen it could be very common...it's in rather large script so I thought it meant something.
Actually I`ve seen several blocks with the XXX `s in the lifter valley, and I`ve seen it discussed on the Stangnet.com forums ...as far as anyone knows the X`s dont mean anything important.
I could try to explain the different things...But I would rather take pics of my wifes Mexican 302 Block thats on my engine stand right now. I`ll get some pics Saturday and post them along with pointing out the differences.
OK here are the pics I took of the Mexican block. The words "Hencho En Mexico" are cast into the center of lifter Valley . The Mexican Main caps are thicker than the other 302`s . The front of the block (Driver side) has a Large lug (bump) cast into it. Finally the block ID number does not look like the other blocks...in other words ,it`s not the typical C908XXXXXXX or D2EAXXXXXXX.ect. Finally ,the Mexican blocks are said to have a Higher nickle content, thus making them stronger.
