CHECK THIS OUT. I think Im going to try it. http://www.bestsynthetic.com/ oil change evry 25000 miles. yes 25000
part of the function of oil is to remove impurities and transport them to the filter, so leave the oil in if you really must, but make sure you still periodically change the filter so it still functions properly and doesn't clog up. .
I couldn't leave the oil in there that long. Would bother my sensibilities!! Igo is right, though, if you keep the filter changed, it should work. Just wouldn't seem right that it would keep it's viscosity that well over that long a time.
personally I would stick to clean new oil... changing the filter will not remove fuel and moisture contamination Jeff
I don't care if it is a synthetic or not. 25000 between oil changes is just WAY too long. I use Castrol petroleum oil and a good Fram filter on all my cars and never have engine trouble. You gotta keep it changed, no way around it. Don't believe every marketing ploy that comes out. It's not worth the risk to YOUR car, not their car.
I know some guys in my Galaxie group that use AMSOIL. They change the filter every four months or every 5000 miles. They swear buy it. One used it in his rebuilt engine for two years and then tore his engine down to put a stroker kit in it. He said there was hardly any wear. He said it looked like he had just put it together. Whether you use AMSOIL, Royal Purple, etc., a timely change of the filter is still required.
over 3000 That is what i have used since i started doing oil changes on my moms car and now on all 4 of of my cars. And I will be honest I have ran close to 5000 miles been 3 quarts low:confused: and it still worked great. i did not do it on purpose!! If I dont stay one my mom she will run 5000-6000 easy One time she ran 10,000 miles.I changed the oil in my sisters cavalier last week. 1st time she had it changed since april 10,050 (hot fudge) her husband got mad cause I changed it.
While I have never used Amsoil, everyone or everytime I hear about it, I hear the best things. OIl changes are cheap, why would anyone want to gamble with that many miles? My 98 Bonneville has 239000 miles on it. I get my oil changed every 5k miles, which is once a month. As a matter of fact, knock on wood, I am still on the original engine, trans, and most other stuff. Only thing has been 2 alternators, with the most recent this morning, I put a new one on it cause it was starting to whine some. I fully intend to take this car to 500000 miles, bout 5 more years. Dan
Consumer Reports did a pretty exhaustive test of oil and filters a few years ago and came to the conclusions that only Castrol lived up to their claims for oil and Fram for filters. Amsoil has been around for a very long time, well before synthetics became fashionable. I've heard nothing bad about it and I did use it in a 1981 Yamaha I bought new and found it to make the bike run better and cooler. Bottom line is whether you use petroleum based or synthetic oils, tens of thousands of miles between changes is just not smart. Even the best and most expensive synthetic will still eventually wear out and become overwhelmed with contaminants. Synthetics have shown in lab tests to hold their viscosity and work better over longer intervals, but I find it very hard to believe that any oil will protect well for as long as the oil you remarked on will without allowing the engine to suffer.
That claim is plain nutz. No matter how good a motor oil is, dirt, moisture, and fuel (some always gets past the rings) contaminate it. And as already mentioned, no filter in existance will last that long...
There is some interesting reading at this websight. You might want to check it out. I read an article by them once last year that stated that they found no significant difference in wear between synthetics and regular oil.
Good Fram oil filter... I've seen two reports that claim Fram oil filters are some of worst you can buy, poor media, poor anti-drainback valve design, poor end caps. They actually dissected 20 different brands of filters and compared them feature for feature. A former Fram engineer agreed with the one report, he said Fram spends all of their money on advertising instead of R & D. He said he was actually at a meeting one time where Fram marketing guys were discussing how difficult it would be for anyone to prove that their filters may have caused engine damage. At or near the top of the list was Purolator and Napa, which is made by Purolator.
I prefer the Purolater filters. I do not care for Fram. I've used nothing but Castrol and Valvoline my entire car life. I may one day use AMSOIL or Royal Purple. I will change the filter every 5,000 miles or every three months. BTW, the normal everyday contaminants DO NOT breakdown the synthetics like it does the petroleum products.
