I have heard the same things over and over about Fram. Not sure how cunsumer reports tested theirs, but their results are contrary to every other report out there.

Most reports I have seen rate Wix really highly. I buy Motorcraft filters.

    oiling

Fram filters have gone down hill in the last 5 yrs due to corp changes. Wix has always been good as is NAPA/Motorcraft/puralotor, all the same manufacturer. KN filters are good also. Military soecs require the oil to be tested and replaced in the tests say so, and change the filters every so many hours. The aircraft industry uses Syn oil and has for years. As far back as WWII, in both jet and piston engines. My 98 Explorer manual says 5K on extreme conditions and up to 15K on normal conditions with filter changes every 5K. Issue here is money. Oil comp want you to change that oil and the recycling comp want you to also. You pay them to take it and they sell it to someone else. They make money twice. Most of the old oil from 40-50+ years ago was from soybeans and the leaded fuel/piston rings contaminated pretty quick. So you had to change the oil every 3-5K miles.

A pair of gloves with rubber/gripper fingers does the same thing as the grip piece on the junky Fram filter.

If you want the sure grip on any filter, clean the new filter off, take a can of undercoating and spray as much sure-grip as needed! I don't really care about the sure grip, though. Just me. Preston

20 people will give 20 different opinions on this. You already know what has worked well for you (Castrol)
Personally I use Royal Purple and a Napa Gold filter because I know how well it works.

Since this was brought back up, what is the consensus on the synthetics being used in newer motors only? I thought about switching to Purple after I break my new motor in (break IN, not BREAK...) and since it is basically an HO motor, thought it might work well in it.

Not worth my time to start a new thread. As cheap as I am, I will probably just keep buying the trusty ole Castrol 10w30...

    You know me...

I just figured that since it was brought back up I would toss that in there.

My grandpa and uncle run Mobile 1 in their trucks, change the filter every 5,000 (Motorcraft) and and oil every 15,000. Grandpa bought his '05 F150 XLT new (5.4 V8/auto) and it now has 90,000 miles with 7 oil changes to date. Uncle bought his 2000 F150 Sport (4.2 V6/5 speed) used in 2001 with only 6,000 miles and it now has around 350,000. Both trucks run excellent, though my uncle said he his getting worried about the original timing chain and clutch in his.

Everyone in my family has always run Castrol in their older vehicles. I run 10w30 in the '72 (FL1A Motorcraft filter) and change the oil and filter every 4 or 5,000. Back when I first started driving my '74 Grabber, the 250 in it was absolutely nasty inside. Under the valve cover it was covered in sludge. Within 5,000 miles of driving (changed the oil 3 times in those first 5,000 miles), the engine was near spotless inside. I am a strong believer of Castrol in older cars.

Dirty oil is dirty oil,3000 mi for dino sauce before additives go by by and contaminants start doing damage. Most synthetics 5000 mi then by by.I have allways used fram filters and have never had an oil related engine problem.
