    how mechanical inclined are you?

THIS APPLIES ONLY ON INDIVIDUAL ROCKER STUD NUTS

if you know how to work around a car and with some tools then you can do this

if you know what side it is take that valve cover off..... if you arent sure....then start the car and get a piece of tubing.....or a stethescope (preferably) or something to that effect.... put the end of the tube to the top of the valve cover and listen to see where the sound is coming from.....mark the top of the valve cover for the location of the sound....

take off the valve cover....and with your hand wiggle the rockers under the mark you made to see if one of them is loose...... if you find one that is loose then you can take a socket and tighten it up just alittle bit until it doesnt wiggle

the rockers will move around alittle bit....you are looking for the rocker that moves more than the others.....

the best way to do this is as follows

    1. take valve cover off....
    2. put a rag on top of the exhasut manifold or headers
    3. have an assistant stop the car...IMPORTANT TO HAVE HELP
    4. turn each nut a little until you hear the tapping noise then tighten again to stop...one the noise stops tuen 1/4 turn more. STOP
    5. do this quickly on all the nuts for the rockers, THE FASTER YOU ARE THE LESS OIL ON THE GROUND
    6. turn off engine.
    7. put valve cover on (might as well change the valve cover gasket at this time...after all its already off)
    8. remove the other side valve cover and repeat the above steps....

after you do all this try and get a compression gage and check the cylinder pressure...refer to your repair manual for recommended pressures...

Look at my post "My 302 is ticking, lifter noise?" Turns out it was a valve stem cap worn out. Maybe this is your problem. It's an easy fix......

Also, it may be an exhaust leak. See if you have a doughnut gasket leaking, or a pin hole in the exhaust pipes, or an exhaust gasket leaking. Just a thought!

I didn't think an exhaust leak would make a ticking noise that matched the engines rpms. if it does than that might be it. I listened to the valve covers with large screwdriver and it sounded alright.

the more rpms you have the more exhaust you have...so yweah it can increase...ijust heard a new exhaust leak on my mav...i gotta fix it tomorrow and tighten up my lifters a bit...

if everything sounds good...then it could be somethign else...when was the last time you had the valve covers off anyways? maybe you could take them off and take a look anyways and replace the valve cover gaskets...

    jsut a thought

The 1/4 inch pipe coming from the manifold to the carb to heat the choke isn't very strong, can rust out easily and cause a ticking.

Lifters and exhaust leak ticking both match the RPM, so not much help there.

My dad's Chevy truck had a broken valve spring that make a ticking sound. He did have dual valve springs, so it wasn't a complete loss of compression... not as likely to happen on a 302.

Pour some tranny fluid through the carb(makes lots of smoke)while revving it a little(cause the fluid will make it try to die)it will free up stuck lifters and make them shutup.Did it on an old '70 LTD I bought from a REPAIR SHOP because they said it"had a rod knocking".I originally bought it for the body parts but ended up getting a good '70 351W as well.

I could see how it may free up a sticky valve, but lifters?

An oil change (new as well as thinner weight) can help get lifters unstuck... some of that Sea Foam engine cleaner...

All righty then! Let me see if I got this one right.

I rev my engine, then pour tranny fluid down the carb (type F?) And all the lifters will be like new again?
How much tranny fluid do i use 3 or 4 quarts?
