Just add tranny fluid until the level is about even with the carb...that should quiet down any noise you might be hearing inthe engine area
From what I've heard it causes the carbon deposits to break/burn up. My boss had a car that had a large chunk of carbon break off the piston, it floated around and sounded like a rod knocking, took the engine down and found out what was. Now tranny fluid is a staple of his 'fix the knocking/ticking' reportoire.
Now that you have it filled to the top of the carb, take the engine out & discard it. Then purchase a new engine, and reinstall. Now all the noise should be gone.....You fixed it!
....once engine is filled to top of carb with tranny fluid, remove all spark plugs. Then, ensuring you have a good battery, crank engine over for about 30-45 sec. Now you will have spread the trans fluid and completely rust-proofed the exhaust manifolds, the block, the...starter.....the inner fenders....the crossmember, the steering linkage....the oil pan....the garage floor.....your shoes/boots....shoe-sized areas of of the doorway & your spouse's kitchen, living room...ugh... Umm, what was the question again? I once saw another mechanic in a Ford shop run a can of what is like engine restore thru a EFI V6 Probe similar to the "thru carb" method. He just pulled a vacuum line, kept rpms picked up, placed the end of the vacuum line in the can, and literally sucked it thru the engine. It was also an actual Ford-branded product too...still sure it was like Restore though. And yes, since it was introduced into the combustion chambers instead of the crankcase... it was for possible "carbon knock", NOT for "ticking" lifters. Brian
Ok maybe I just had a piece of carbon in that windsor, but it worked.Another scenario;got an old merc monarch(wish I'd kept it for the discs)with lifters ticking, added a quart of tranny fluid to the oil,ran it about 50 miles then changed the oil a couple times and it hushed them up.Either way I figured it was worth a shot before turning any wrenches.
there is also an oil that i used when i drove the maverick back to arizona from kentucky on the old 6 cylinder that was in it....the valve train made one hell of a racket..... the additive is called Rislone (Rizlone) yellow plastic bottle....and if you also have your crancase a little fuller than normal...like .5 to 1 quart over max.... it jhelps keep things quite..... the good part is it made the engine real quite for the long 1750 mile trip home....
I've seen a guy just pour WATER down a carb to loosen carbon deposits and it worked had it running at about 3000 rpm. did the tranny fluid in the oil to my truck just yesterday and it cleaned up my lifters I hope, they may have stopped ticking just cause I changed the oil afterwards!
Both of those make sense. The tranny fluid in the oil has different stuff than oil, I've heard of using it for various quick fixes. Tranny fluid to get rid of carbon, yep, again, seen it done, seen it work on sticky valves as well. As for the water through the carb, been there done that. Ever notice how clean the piston and chamber are if you have a blown head gasket? gotta watch out for two things tho. too much water can bend a rod, occasionally it will make one run hot. I generally get it to about 1500rpms, it will stall the engine out if you get too much water in there. At 3000, you have more momentum in the reciprocating assembly, it is harder to stall, but be more likely to bend a rod. I want it to run without stalling, that is all.
