So this weekend has been a good one for the Maverick. Dealt with a little oil leak, new tires, got the front end aligned... And made a trip to the Pull-A-Part for that holy grail of electric fans, the 3.8 Taurus fan! 'Bout died of heat exhaustion getting it, but only paid about $15!

Unfortunately I can't make it fit. I knew it was a little thick but I thought I could cut it down, and I tried to, but no luck. I've got about 4" between the radiator and the bolts of my water pump pulley and it's just not going to happen. My aftermarket radiator is unusually thick.

So, what other electric fan+shroud assemblies have been used successfully, and might fit my application? I already have a 16" electric fan and it's... sufficient... but I think a shrouded one is the way to go here if I can make it work.

    Thanks!

i used one off a escort. i didnt have to cut it at all. the fan motor and blades are nice and big. it cools my built 302 with 11 to 1 compression just fine. i am using a mizier elec water pump so im not shure if it will clear a regular water pump. i do have a thick alum rad. the fan motor on the escort is off set to one side and that helps it clear my water pump. the elec water pump is big and looks to consume the same space as a pully powered pump.

Thanks a lot man! It looks like you have the same radiator I do, or very similar. And it LOOKS like that electric water pump sticks out about as far as my pulley... It's close enough that I'm willing to go to the junkyard and bet another $15 on it anyway. Soon as it's not so brutally hot out there. Would you say that the distance between your pump and your radiator is about 4 inches?

Nice engine compartment, by the way.

Has anyone tried the Lincoln Mark(whatever number they are on...) fan?

I believe I read on the Mustang board that this fan is thin, but VERY strong.
I know you have to use a serious relay and run a dedicated battery cable to it.
    Classic Stang guys love it.

i did try the lincon mark 8 fan. it was just too big. that escort fan pushes a ton of air. ive dealt with alot of elec fans and the escort one is one of the stronger ones i have used. the lincon one is defintly the best one ive ever come across. in my opinion the ford elec fans are beter than any aftermarket fan ive ever tryed

Yeah, I looked at a Lincoln Mark VIII fan while I was out there, and some mid-90's T'birds. Way too big unfortunately.

Too bad... the Stang guys love those things. But they have bigger cars too.

I have always worried about the idea, they say you need a 150 amp relay to run one!

Yeah, I don't know if I'm ready to upgrade my whole electrical system just for a fan anyway. That thing would suck a battery dry in no time with our stock alternators.

As for the size, it's way too big for my Maverick, but if you've got a smaller radiator than I do you might have better luck.

i run two 30 amp relays in paralle and a 60 amp maxi fuse. i have ran that set up on the lincon fan with no problems. the lincon fan would blow a 50 amp fuse when it turns on.

I saw a couple of different sized "pancake" fans at Advance Auto Supply today, I think in the $35-40 range. I have seen them at AutoZone also.

They should fit with no problems, and are easy to find, if you live near those stores. And you don't have to guess about if it will fit or run when you hook it up.

Only benefit to a junk yard fan is they often have a pretty good sized shroud. Mine ended up fitting my entire radiator with only 1/4 - 1/2" uncovered all the way around. The pancake ones are round leaving the corners unshrouded.
