I finally put the finishing touches on my personal transmission (C4). Machined a return into the linkage seal pocket. Reamed the cooler return and rear lube circuits to 7/32". Drilled the case for positive pressure lube to #9 thrust washer. Installed 6 clutches in the forward pack and set clearance to .030". Installed 5 clutches in the direct pack and set the clearance at .025". Modified pump/stator support for added cooling capacity (and more lube oil to the rear. Replaced all bushings. Fit new gears to the pump. Drilled both drums for added cooling. Modified valve body for select shift and Street and strip performance. Set overall end play to .012" and the front clutch to stator support at .003". Painted and serialized the transmission. All that's left is to wait until the local community college can install it - some time in October.
I keep the original Ford ID from the tag but I also add a serial number that has all the data from the rebuild in it - for my records. It tells me everything that I have done to the transmission and the date of completion. As for paint..... Those on the board who have one of my transmissions know that they are painted the "ugliest color of yellow" possible. I have two reasons for the yellow paint - it shows any trace of leaks better than any other color and the other reason is because I have been painting my rebuilds that color since the early 70's - even bad habits are hard to break.
wow Man, if you weren't on the other side of the country I'd say I have found my tranny guy! Nice work!
Sounds great Paul! What about the servo? Are you using a stock servo? If so, which letter? Did you mod the servo housing or cover at all? Thanks! Dave
Dave, If I was actually putting the C4 behind a high performance engine and not just a stock two barrel 302 I would have used the "H" servo but as it was I just replaced the "B" servo with one of my stock "A" servos. It has a tad bit more holding power than the "R" sevo but more release area than the "R". No mods to the servo (other than replacing with a stock "A" servo and cover). This C4 will never see more than 280 HP and it will last a long time doing that. I won't have to ever rebuild it again.... well unless something like a cooler line blows and I don't notice it for too long..... :^( With a 30000 lb rated cooler and my radiator cooler it should stay under 175 F all the time.
Well, I got my Maverick back from the college after they installed the C4. I have to say it is a lot nicer than the old one. It shifts nice and firm even when I am being light footed. When I put my foot down just a bit it spins the rear tires - It was a good thing there wasn't a cop nearby. I am going to have to get used to taking off with a very light touch on the "GO" pedal. I haven't gotten it out where I can see what happens at full throttle but I bet it is going to be scary! It has no hesitation at all - in drive or manually shifted. It sure makes the car feel stronger. It is pretty nice for a $250 + labor C4.
