Got a freebee yesterday, a complete original 71 ford 302 breather. When i say complete- I mean the top and bottom as well as the heat sheild and this tube that connects with the exhaust manifold. for FREE!!! So, my question is how does the door in the breather work? it has a spring in the breather neck. no electrical conections. so im thinking this is for heat to the choke? can someone explain this to me. obtw- the paint on all of this is perfect. it's like the to it off the car day one, but did not throw it away.:bananaman

The heated air intake portion of the air cleaner consists of a thermostat (1970-72 models or bimetal switch (1973-77 models), and vacuum motor (1973-77 models), and a spring-loaded temperature control door in the snorkel of the air cleaner. The temperature control door is located between the end of the air cleaner snorkel which draws in air from the engine compartment and the duct that carries heated air up from the exhaust manifold. When under hood temperature is below 90°F, the temperature control door blocks off under hood air from entering the air cleaner and allows only heated air from the exhaust manifold to be drawn into the air cleaner. When under hood temperature rises above 130°F, the temperature control door blocks off heated air from the exhaust manifold and allows only under hood air to be drawn into the air cleaner.

By controlling the temperature of the engine intake air this way, exhaust emissions are lowered and fuel economy is improved. In addition, throttle plate icing is reduced, and cold weather drivability is improved from the necessary leaner mixtures.

There should be a short piece of flex tubing that connects to the exhaust manifold heat stove (a sheet metal cover over the exhaust manifold).

this is a long steel tube. it fits directly into the exhaust manifold. it is 12 inches long. it also has an offset to connect to something. and at 1 inch from the top there is a flange for what ever connects to that. any idea's?

I may be wrong but shouldn't that tube your referring to tie the exhaust manifold to the egr valve, egr valve to the intake manifold or heads in some systems. But I think I'm wrong cause I don't think that system was used that late.............

    Got a picture :)

The tube you are refering to should go to the choke on carb if is the one I am thinking about.

i don't know for sure. seems to me that there was no egr on the 71 motor, so that may just be it.
