That 1/4" tube connects to the choke. It supplies hot air for the choke to work. It should have a fitting on the end that matches the one on the choke housing. If it is just a tube without the fitting it connects to the bottom of the air cleaner with a hose to supply clean air to the choke heat tube.

IM REALLY NOT SURE. It does have a flange on it at the top which could take a small rubber hose. i know its the top because the other end is the only one that fits the exhaust manifold. and since i cant find any evidence of a egr system in 71, it just makes since that its for the choke. if i go elcetric choke them all i need to do is plug the exh manifold?:yup:

No need to plug anything unless the electric choke uses the hot air from the exhaust manifold - some do, some don't.

If the carb has a place to couple the heat tube then it uses it. If the carb doesn't then you don't have to think about it.
The benifit of the heat tube is that it will keep the choke open longer after the car is shut off so it doesn't start with a closed choke every time you go into the parts store for a half hour. I hate electric chokes!

    Standard automatic choke. Not electric.
Or you could do what I do and get a carb with a manual choke - I like them!
