Car is a 6 cyl. 200 ci. It has the original muffler but it’s rotted. Want to replace with the same one. It’s a walker, I can read the numbers on side.. 2173 and there might be a 1 after the 3 but I can’t tell. Muffler body is 19” long, muffler is round, approx 6 1/2” across. I searched the walker site but they don’t show it. Was going to call walker on Monday to see if they have any suggestions but I thought I check with the group first. Has anyone replaced their muffler with the original type? (Single exhaust). Thanks!
The orig muffler would have been welded to pipe and have a Ford part number. Never was Walker, Maremont etc on a OEM part.
Got a muffler... hate the sound. Has anyone put a new muffler on their 6 cyl 200 ci maverick? Looking for something quiet... don’t need to make it sound like something it isn’t. Not sure if it has to be round. That’s what was on their and I purchased another round muffler that actually bolts to the factory bracket but sounds annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
For fifty year old cars, often original type parts aere unobtanium, thus adapting and/or modification are common. Rockauto has no muffler listing for any year Maverick. Translation, " they ain't made no mor". Tempo had rear muffler & are round. Please note this is a suggestion only, the AP listing includes dimensions. If you still have orig, would fairly easy to compare. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog...id+l4,1139374,exhaust+&+emission,muffler,5872
I suggest going to a muffler shop, preferably who does custom work and ask them for a quiet muffler. I bought a set of mufflers off Amazon "Soundex generic", about two years ago -- that was a mistake. They are annoying at highway speed, tolerable at below 45. The mufflers I put on the car when I bought 10 years ago were put on at muffler shop suggestion -- I really like them -- very mellow. What I plan next season -- replace the Soundex units.
One more question... since my car is original and had a round muffler when I got it, I assumed it was round. Maybe it’s not supposed to be. Has anyone used something other than round?
I don't believe any cars from factory came w/ round mufflers. AFAIK most round mufflers are glass-pak/straight -thru designed to be loud. Consult your muffler shop, even if your doing job yourself , they do this daily and can most likley steer you in direction your looking to go..
Ok. Thanks. (Car had only 8,700 miles on it when I got it and the muffler was rotted through, I assumed it was the original muffler since the mileage was so low... it was a round walker muffler. So it must have been replaced at some point early in its life). Thanks for the info. I’ll see what the shop recommends.
I seriously doubt it was OE even w/ 8700 miles. Fifty years on mufflers of that period had short life spans compared to mufflers of today. It would rust through from moisture laying in bottom of muffler for extended period. My 06 Buick Lucerne 50+K miles has OE exhaust system. Exhaust components of that 70's era were lucky to get 5 years on OE parts and less if subject to a lot of road salt spray.
Yes original mufflers were round, I don't remember any Ford vehicle with muffler at rear being oval. My '64 Galaxie with duals used two round mufflers. The '71 Comet parts car I bought had a round muffler.
Ok thanks again. The muffler shop should have an idea of which one I should use then. I think it has to be round because of the limited space near the gas tank.
I put a "Dynomax super turbo" on my car. I wanted quiet.....but it is not silent. Quiet on the freeway. Quiet above 35 for the most part. But the smallest inlet is 2" for this. A decent muffler shop should be able to sell you something quiet tho. And there is always autozone.....lol.
