You guys are way out of my league. I could easily afford the heads.. but that valve train requirement costs more than some of my entire motors! lol Although you likely already mentioned it prior.. are you using the quench style heads on this motor? I've worked on a few sets of Cleveland heads through the years and I and a few others I knew used MPG's port plates with great success. Been several years since I looked but they may even still sell them. I've always prefered putty in my cast iron intake ports but used the stingers on the exhaust side because that floor design is downright atrocious for its effect on the short side turn(as are the 385 series motors too) and actually HOWLS on a flowbench. I never tested the plates on a flowbench but many others have reported that they reduce that tendency. I do know that they change the exhaust note slightly though and were worth every single penny spent. IIRC.. I even have an old flow test on various Cleveland config's somewhere. I think it was comparing the 2bbl, 4bbl, and aftermarket AL versions. Probably Edelbrock since they were about the only ones doing a casting that long ago. EDIT: yep.. they still make em'! http://www.mpgheads.com/port_plates_a.php oohhh.. these are nice too! Heavy.. but nice. lol http://www.ausfordparts.com/ausheads.html I know Blue Thunder used to modify these heads in similar fashion too.. but it looks like they just sell the CHI stuff now. Then there's these if you really want to get serious about exhaust flow on stock castings. I'm not sure how far back this mod goes.. but I do know that before the aftermarket got flooded with canted valve heads.. these were the hot ticket. http://www.pricemotorsport.com/
I have a pair of those Australian 2v heads. They came with valves and what's nice is that they're normal single groove and not the 3 groove crappy ones that came on the USA heads.
A guy approached me awhile back about buying a pair of 351C heads that had been heavily mod'd by Bob Gromm(the same guy who did the machine work on my 408), and I still have the guys number if anyone is interested. The fairly mild motor that Bob build did over 550hp on the dyno with somewhere around 480lbft of torque. Peak HP was at 6500rpm and peak torque was at 4500rpm..........and it had 400lbft of torque at 3000rpm which is a bunch. I did talk with Bob about the heads and he didn't tell me much except he did almost $2500 worth of work and flow testing to them some years ago. The motor had about 9.5to1 compression and a mild roller with single 750 carb and ran on pump gas..................the reason the guy is selling the heads is because he went with the CHI heads and intake.
For what I'm doing at this time, I'm using closed chamber 4bbl heads with just a mild cleanup, Manley Race Flo valves and a Comp valve train. I want to do a Fairmont Pro Stock tribute car next (gotta fill up the garage) and I have my eyes on a pair of heavily worked Cleveland heads with the raised exhaust port plates that bolt on. They were at one time on a Pro Stock but the guy couldn't remember whose it was. Going to try to get them in the next month or so. SPark
If you don't mind me asking what part of Iowa are you from. The reason I ask is I am originally from Ottumwa and still have a lot of family and friends there.
I actually have a sister in law that lives in Bloomfield. Did you ever take any of your cars to Eddyville I used to hang out there every weekend when I was in High School and after I graduated. I raced a tan Monte Carlo and a Red 73 Chevelle Laguna. And I also have a brother in law that has a Blue 63-64? Falcon. He still races I believe.
I go to Eddyille a few times a year. I've been circle track racing for the last 25 years or so but do go up to watch occasionally. Think I know who your bro-in-law is if he's tall, 30ish and the Falcon is blue and silver? Fiberglass teardrop hood. SPark
Got the hood today. Very happy with Jegs service, shipping and price. Check here for some pics. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=97050&page=2 Check out post #14 for the pics. $428.99 shipped to the door, no truck freight, no hidden fees. SPark
OK! Finally ready to get back at this thing for real! Got my chop saw! Got my torch! Found all my tools! Everything under one roof and accounted for, let's do this! I got a few things for the Maverick to get it back moving, too. Summit is shipping the ARP rocker and head studs, the Manley guide plates and Harland Sharp roller rockers. Speedway is shipping the oil restrictor kit for the 351C. Also bought a 1970 351C block and crank that have been in storage since 1974. They have less than 20,000 miles on them and I got them from the original owner. He pulled them in '74 when he wrecked the car but never used them on anything. The crank literally looks brand new and you can still see cross hatch in a few spots in the cylinder bores. Will make a nice foundation for the engine built for that car. Found a brand new in the box Milodon stock replacement pan on Craigs List and it will be the basis for the old school deep sump pan I want for that car. Also got a CVR starter for it. Also been shopping for parts and pieces for my '62 unibody build. Received my dual quad air cleaner from Tony Branda, ordered my aluminum pent roof Blue Thunder valve covers from Survival Motorsports (on back order until first of March, supposedly). Summit is shipping the Flowtech headers (I'm going to cut them up to fit around the Industrial Chassis cross member kit and weld to the GT 14 bolt flanges) the Powermaster alternator and CRV starter. Speedway is shipping the Tuff Stuff power steering pump with integral tank and the pulley for it. My local NAPA had the best deal on a water pump and fuel pump. That should let me button up the front accessory drives, exhaust out of the engine compartment and the motor mounts. That should keep the UPS, SpeeDee Delivery and FedEx men busy for a couple days anyway. It's going to hover near zero here for the rest of this week so the shop will be a good place to hide. Started pulling the Cleveland. Going to strip it down and get building on it with the standard bore block/crank I got. Also going to get the springs out and do some shock tower work, finally! Pictures to follow as work actually happens again, SPark
Well, everything has shown up except the valve covers I ordered from Survival Motorsports for my unibody. Also scored a single 15x3.5 slotted front wheel on EBAY tonight that matches my rear wheels. All I need to do now is find out where it's twin is living so I have a full set! SPark
Found a 15x3.5 wheel and got it bought......now all I need to do is find it's long lost brother so I have a set! Anyone that knows where there is a 15x3.5 Fenton slot, let me know. There's a finders fee for pointing me in a successful direction. Got it mounted this afternoon, will look better once it's moved out 3 inches or so with the tower narrowing project. Also got started on the fiberglass scoop mounted to the fiberglass hood. Got everything cut to shape, extra trimmed from the scoop and hole cut in the hood. This is the first phase, sticking the hood where I want it. The globs of putty will be chipped off after the scoop is glassed in from the inside. Tomorrow we glass the scoop to the hood and get ready for the outer bond and body work to blend it in. I got a text from my friends with their real Pro Stock Maverick. One is a real deal the other is a re-creation. Think he's using a 427 Tunnel Port in the re-creation and the real deal will get a 427 SOHC. Here's a couple teaser pics of the car that will have a tunnel port in it. He probably thinks I'm a jerk because I didn't respond to his text but my phone won't let me. Hopefully he sees this and understands and/or corrects me if I'm wrong on the engines of choice for their projects. Later, SPark
