Returning after a few years. Near the coast, moving inland soon. 1974 Maverick, 250/C4 with factory power steering.
I finally have time to expand my introduction. Bought my first Maverick (light green '73 2 door, 200 auto) from a VW dealer in Ohio in 1979. In 1982 I packed up the wife, three kids (5, 3, & 1) and drove it to California...no A/C, end of June. Ohio car so it was rusted out in the rear quarters, but I drove it until '85 when I traded it in. Second was a '70 2 door with black California plates, 170 auto that I bought for $250 in '92/'93. Drove it from San Diego to Mississippi . On the way back I managed to run off the road into a power pole. Dead center front end damage. Got it aligned and new tires and limped it back to SD. You can't kill these cars. Replaced the bumper, valance, hood, one fender, and some general body brackets & hardware. My son drove it from '97 to '00. I had a couple of other '70's but they didn't amount to much. One I stripped & scrapped and the other I sold too cheap to a guy that wanted to race it. Current car is a '74, 250 auto with factory power steering. I liked the look of the '73 hood stripe, so I laid it out and painted it on this car. I also liked the Stallion decal, so I had my wife cut me a set on her stencil cutter. The car runs and drives. Pretty clean body with no rust through in the usual spots. I've got a complete interior with high-back bucket seats that I hope to swap out this winter. It's not a show car, but it turns a few heads. I also like the white side walls...if you're going to be retro, go all the way. I'm still not sure about the wheels though. All of my mavericks have been six cylinder cars. Say what you will about the 302, but I like the inlines. The I6's are almost bullet-proof. I've run one completely out of water. Let it cool. Changed the oil, radiator, water pump and freeze plugs (two blew out) and drove it for another three years.
In Norfolk, moving to Saxe (Charlotte County) in a couple of years. Moving the car into the garage there soon.
