1978 ford pick up 9 inch rear end

    Ok found a 9 inch finally for cheap but it came off a pick up,how much work would it take to put in the maverick?

    Housing will need to be shortened and axles will need to be shortened, resplined and redrilled to the 5.25" pattern or new axles. Trucks also have the 31 spline axles vs. 28 in cars. Could probably have the axle tubes from your 8" welded on it and put a 28 spline diff. in.

    I've heard that some trucks had the 28 spline axles. Also heard you could swap the spider gears, 28's for the 31's. For sure would have to use the Maverick or other 8" ends,backing plates and drums, and axles. Like Jamie said, you should be able to use your 8" axle tubes in the 9" chunk....unless you have a 4 lug 8"....they have smaller ends and different axles.

    Yep it is pretty spendy to have all that work done .Most machine shops are at $40 an hour shop rate ..

    This is correct. I have grabbed 2 different 3rd members out of trucks and both were 28 spline. Both trucks were six cylinder powered.

    Times three on this. Lots of trucks had 28 spline axles. 78 could be either 28 or 31.

    If you're going to spend money narrowing it, go with new 31 spline axles and use the truck's rear drum brakes, you'll just need to swap to drums with a 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

    double check that housing,,, most likely has the big axle tubes and more of a oval pumkin housing, not the cicle round.

    The spline count depends more on year than anything, when it comes to trucks.
    Some years were mostly 28 spline, some years were primarily 31 spline.

    For 200-250, here, you can have your 8" tubes welded to a 9" housing pumpkin.
    This is the way Ford did it in for the K-codes.
    As long as the finished product is the same exact width as the donor 8" (and the 9" chunk is 28 spline), you can use your Maverick axles and brakes. It'll bolt right in because you pretty much have the same rear you took out, except the center is modded to accept the 9" chunk.

    Then there's the ones with the big 31 spline sized axles, that are necked down at the inner ends to 28.

    I guess I missed the part where I said trucks ONLY have 31 spline axles (in fact I own a '78 F150 with 28 spline). If it's out of a truck, you may as well just assume it's 31 until you can verify.

    I have seen truck years grouped into 2 catagories, but not being a truck guy, I don't know the years by heart. You'd have to look it up. But there are known years that you should assume 28 splines until you verify, then other known years that 31 splines should be assumed until you verify.

    There are 3 housing centers:
    round-car = strong, but weakest of the 3.
    oval- big car/truck = strong
    banjo (long oval) = heaviest and by far strongest.
    The banjo housing is supposed to be most common in big cars, especially Lincolns.

    Isn't there 4 counting the early 9" rears ? You know, the one's that look like the 8" from the backside ? (ala, 57-59 Ford)
