I understand what you are saying....but if you look at the beginning of this thread you will see that I did have a motor, but the person backed out on selling it. I normally won't do things this backwards...but if you look at what I have written I have admitted to this not going the way that i planned. Yes, I have been getting really mixed info on some stuff. But I do have to disagree about the junkyard stuff.....This truck is an accident vehicle, and they already told me that they would get it running for me....but I have decided against going that route do to the fact that I am pretty sure that it has the p style heads on it which wont work with any headers (depending on who you talk to)..... I am looking in the 'right' places too...I have opened the newspaper and looked around, and I still have to go look at some motors.....and I have also opened up catalogs, and looked at crate motors instead....but something about buying a 3000 motor doesnt do it for me...I may end up with that into the motor anyways....but it doesnt seem like as much money up front..... Also the person who I have helping me on this (my boyfriend) has converted many ford turbo coupes to roller V8 motors in the last 10 years....he also converted an older ranger to a 4 cyl turbo motor out of one of those turbo coupes.....(that was pretty cool, that truck rocked.) So we pretty much know what we are doing as far as the normal 87-93 mustang motor..... I dont mean to get defensive....I do know what I want to do with this project. The body work part of this isnt important to me right now.... but as far as the motor and tranny. I am running a late model 302...(that is what I will be buying!) and a world class t-5 tranny...(havent bought that yet either).... ......well....phew....sorry Diana

Note that I said "Chances are.....". Around here a majority of the engines lurking in junkyards are junk. Most of the "recycler's" snatch up the insurance vehicles and part them out. The engines are long gone before the public gets near them. I'm not knocking anyone if they can find a good, running engine in the junkyard/scrapyard/recycler/salvage yard/etc. I simply got tired of being lied to about the condition of engines from these sources.
Not all explorer/Mountianer engines have the "P" heads. 97 is the transition year. Depending on when it was made (early or late in the year) it could have GT40 or GT40P Heads. You can look at the spark plug angle or there is a casting mark on the heads just below the valve coverin the corner. It will have "III" for GT40 or "P" for GT40P. The GT40 heads will except normal headers because the spark plug is in the normal position. I bought a 99 explorer motor for the heads only. I havent put the "P" heads on yet but I sold the intake set up (complete upper and lower) For $280. Like another member said the front cover parts are sought after also. My "P" heads are iron, I think the GT40's are also iron from the factory. From what I have heard a 4.6 T5 wont work with a 5.0 motor. I think the bellhousing and input shafts are different.
Thanks rx.....I am still looking around, maybe tonight I will go take a look at that motor in the junkyard just for hahas....and see which heads it has on it....if ot has the p heads I am not going to go that route, because I already bought the hooker 6901 headers that I want to run....but in the off chance that the guy at the yard was wrong, and it has gt40 normal heads....I might go that route....but I still need to find that tranny....t-5. I have a couple leads from the local paper, will see how those turn out....Thanks for the info Diana
An easy way to tell GT40P heads from normal GT40s is to look at the front (end) of the head. GT40s have three vertical bars cast in, GT40Ps have 4 vertical bars.
"regular" Gt40's are iron and were normally on cobra R mustangs, mine are F3ZE indicating they were 93 mustang items. Mine also have 68cc combustion chambers according to the company that ported 'em for me. GT40P's are 60 cc's. I got tired of looking/waiting for a set of headers that would work on my Maverick and replaced them with E7TE heads and just put the "P" heads on a roller block in my Fairmont since there are many headers available for Fox-platform stuff. My GT40's have GT cast in many different places, my GT40P's have GTP in the lower corners under the valve cover near the head bolt.
