I have a 1973 mercury comet gt that has a 200 straight six in it and I have an opportunity to get a 302 that used to be in a 77 pickup from a friend for next to nothing. I figured that it would take a different bell-housing to bolt that 302 to the 3-speed manual that the six cylinder is bolted to now (i could be wrong). I wanted to know if anyone knows of a bell-housing that would work and if you do let me know that would be great. Would it better to get another transmission altogether? Also what other problems might I run into doing this swap? Thanks.

At the least you'll need bellhousing, flywheel, clutch & pressure plate... Also clutch & throttle linkage, plus motor mounts, radiator etc etc... I dunno if small 6cyl & v8 trans used the same input shaft or bellhousing bolt pattern...

Try typing in " 200 I6 to 302 Conversion" in the search function.

What is the 3-speed manual transmission called? That would help to find a bell-housing. Was the 3-speed in my car used with a 302 in other cars equipped with that engine?

It would be better to get another transmission altogether.
If the trans could be made to bolt up, lots of changes would be required. Then you would still have A very light duty 3 speed.
It would probably be as easy and economical to upgrade to something with overdrive. As many times as it's been done, it's been figured out. Every problem has been solved.

Does anyone know of a used manual transmission that would fit into the comet behind a 302

A T5 seems like A perfect choice here.
That bell is for A top loader. It won't fit the t5 without an adapter.

I believe that they were all 3 speeds. I don't know what they were named (top loader etc.). I bet some one else here knows.

It would be nice to find out because I don't want to spend the money to put a t5 in the car right now. If I could find an old manual transmission that I know will go in the car behind a 302, or possibly use the one I am using now, that would be great. If I can't find a bellhousing online are there any companies that make custom ones? I am sure that people have made more odd requests before.
