Tanks1a.jpg As most know the 70 Maverick fuel tank was a one year only configuration where the tanks drops in from the trunk and is the trunk's floor. Replacement tanks aren't available and decent used ones are getting harder to find. Thought about a fuel cell but I wanted to keep trunk space because I like to carry a full sized spare tire, tools, etc. So after some research I decided to try and install a 22 gallon 70 Mustang tank to replace the original 16 gallon unit. You can see the difference between the Maverick and Mustang tanks. I came up with 3 or 4 different ways to mount the new tank. What I finally decided on was to make a perimeter frame for the tank out of 1" steel angle. I then used that to figure out where the trunk floor needed to be cut open. I had to move the right wall outward about 6". Frame1.jpg Frame2.jpg Hole1.jpg

A few coats of Rustoleum primer and satin black paint to the bottom surfaces of the tank and frame and we're ready to test fit. You can see the horizontal and vertical holes in front of the tank that will need to be filled in. The frame rests on the the original right & left side and rear lips and is bolted to the sides with eight 1/4-20 grade 8 bolts. The holes in the front are filled in with some 14 gauge steel I had laying around. I found some rust I need to work on over the winter before I finish the trunk and paint it. I don't need that conversion for my 70 as it don't need any gas sitting on jack stands :sarcasticclap:

Forgot to add, the Taiwanese fuel sender o-ring didn't fit right, leaked gas all over the floor. Bought one from CJ Pony Parts that worked. You could see the difference in the O-rings, weren't even close in thickness.

Finished it in 2015. I'll have to get a pic of the rear, maybe this weekend.
