289 vs. 302

    Someone swapped in a 302 short or long block (gotta check the heads) and used all the accessories from the original 289.
    That would account for the 3 bolt balancer.
    The 3 and 4 bolt balancers can be used on either crank.

    I'd wager they put in a short block and kept the original balancer so they could use the 3 bolt pulleys.

    That sounds reasonable. That's probably why I was told it was a 289. I never checked it untill we pulled the pan to change it to the fox pan for the Mustang. That's just mo better for the drag car!
