I have a set of 295's sitting in my shop I'll try them on the comet tomorrow and see what the deal is. I'll snap some pic's if they fit but the wheels they are on are fairly hideous lol.
Hey I tried those wheels and tires on, couldn't believe they actually fit fairly good. Wheels only have 3.75" backspacing but are 8.5 inches wide. There is a spot in the front in the wheelwell where it appears it may rub during cornering but a little hammer action would fix. About 1/2" clearance between tire and spring. Just fit in there nice don't stick out in that ugly way they do sometimes. The tread is in the wheelwell where it should be. Check out my gallery for the pics
1 question: if the bs of the wheel is 4.25 to 5 is bad for the fitting, and if the bs is 4 to 3 is good for the fitting or is it the other way?
With a wider rim/tire combo you want more BS as in 4.5bs compared to 3.75..but if you have too much bs it'll hit the leaf springs, easy fix is to shim it out with a wheel spacer. if its the other way around only way to bandaid it would be to roll lip or raise rearend
so what you´re saying is that if i put, let´s say, a 15x8 wheel with 4.75 bs it could rub with my leaf springs. and if i put a 15x8 wheel with 3.75 bs it will rub with the wheelwells?
295 50 15 I Hear a lot of talk about bs my wife say i know a lot about bs or mybe iam full of bs i will have to check with her. at any rate i have had 295 on an old maverick and thay stuck out but is looked good. just run what you brung. thanks
The 275/50-15 drag radials have been a kick in the pants. Good drag gumballs and very nice grip for "enthusiastic" street driving. Problem is, they have worn down to looking just about like slicks. I've been nervous that a bubble gum machine might pull me over and write me up. Consequently, I began shopping for some wide street rubber. Looked at the Mickey Thompson Radial Sportsman, but didn't like the 235 dollar price tag. The 295/50-15's were another option, but I was worried about the extra 1/2" height. Despite that, I bit the bullet anyway and picked up some Firestone Firehawk 295/50-15's I was waiting for the dreaded rub, but with 1/2 tank of fuel and even a pop over some good speed bumps....no rubbing! Granted, the baseball fender lip roll I did for the 275's probably helped. Took 3 picks of the new tires and one pic of the old rubber for comparison. Oddly enough, the old 275's look as wide if not wider than the 295's When the 295's are measured though, they come up about .5" wider. As you can see, even these tires look a bit scrawny for a performance rig, but it's about the max I can mount with the stock wheel wells and springs. For my taste, these are about the minimum width for that brutal look. Frankly, I would like some 315's back there. Now I just need to pick up a second set of wheels to put the softies on for racing.
I know what you're thinking...come on, no rubbing anywhere? Ok, Ok,...I noticed the passenger side tire was scraping on something. Turns out it was hitting the traction bar front flange and u-bolt. Grinding down the flange and trimming some of the bolt helped, but also had to move the entire bar inboard. The only other thing I found was odd.......I noticed some over-steer going on. I played with the tire pressures and have it minimized, but still those sweeping interchange clover leafs require some heightened concentration!
If you roll fender lips, 275 tires on 8" wheels fits just fine. 295 tires on 8" wheels probably fits, but is not recommended. too much tire fot thin wheels. I got 295 tires on 10" steel wheels, but to fit properly and avoid rubbing yu got to rebuild the fender border like I did in my Maverick(second pic)
7th month update: They've been a good rag so far for street driving. Wearing good, traction decent, and manners are acceptable. Virtually no rubbing, except for the occasional enthusiastically approached speed bump with more than 1/2 tank of fuel. Happy with 'em so far.
