That is a little oversimplified. Old guys like me remember when you couldn't get aftermarket heads. I do remember many very fast cars though...
You're exactly right. However, I'll refer back to my first sentence above. It costs mega bucks to get a set of stock windsor heads, for example, to flow as much as a set of AFRs or TWs. And to be truthful, there are hundreds of NHRA stock class racers who are doing just that. But, building a stock class car these days is expensive. I'm an old guy too. I remember distinctly when brand x guys were wearing me out with stock heads. We were putting brand x valves in the stock windsors and hoging out the bowls and grinding off injector humps. But, I'll stick with my recommendation for building a 302. Build a Cleveland or a Boss 302 (now you're talking money!) or a 460, then stock heads are very workable. And, there never was any moss growing on 428CJs. Unless I'm mistaken (happens occasionally!) the heads on his 302 are pretty anemic. Mid 70s was the pits. Again, JMHO.
A kid in my neighborhood has one of those SS Impala's also. Has chrome rims and loud exaust and goes through the neighborhood with the booming stereo blipping the gas like he's the badest thing on the road. One night we just happend to be driving out of the neighborhood at the same time. I revved my car a little and then he made the mistake of power brakeing it in front of me. We pulled out and I gunned it... throughly smoked his a$$ with the Fiat.
Stall converter there cheep alone it wont win the race but will help a lot ask the cam manufacture you go with what stall speed they recommend for the cam you buy.
