Looked at your build again, I see you used the Gates heat shrink clamps. Those things are very cool, sold some to a guy my wife worked with for his Nova and they clean the engine bay up that much more.

Does anyone know how close the Explorer front system is to the mustang? I went out and looked at that and it does seem very similar to the Mustang. I would think the cougar is so wide in order to keep the profile down to fit under the hood. Not sure that is as big a deal with our cars.

I also waited to cut the tube to length until after I filled it with 5qrts of oil

Thanks Krazy Comet, looks like the '98 explorer is the same as the Mustang. At least everything is in the same places. My explorer uses the alternate routing as shown in the top right pic. I'll pull all that off and put on the Mav if the current set up is too wide in the car. That would commit me to finally get around to stripping the vehicle too.

The Explorer engine is destined for a mid '60's F100 that is my retirement project vehicle when I find one. The big belt system would fit fine under the hood of one of those. If this does go in, I can always swap them later when I get that project under way.

I'd use the configuration just below that with the smog pump eliminated in either vehicle.

If the pan is off I think so.

Otherwise you'll have cuttings in your oil pan, a recipe for disaster.

I was just told it will be okay if I put thick grease on a drill bit go slow and keep cleaning. What's your thoughts

That would help a bunch but I would also change the oil before start up to improve your chances of success.

I'm going on record as saying, even changing oil you'd be flirting with disaster. Metal particles will lay on bottom of pan no matter how many times the oil is changed. At least till the engine is started, then oil rushing to pickup will pull the cuttings into pump.

    It's a bad idea!!

I've tried greased bits and shopvacs with small micro attachments.. nearly impossible to keep those last few drillings from falling into the motor when the drillbit breaks all the way through.

The filter might be able to save bearings but the oil pump will get trashed in short order since it's first in line before pushing through the filter.

Flush the oil pan with gas or diesel. Aluminum cuttings aren't the disaster everyone seems to think. The disaster would be a broken drill bit. If you're really concerned, pull the timing cover off and drill it. Pull the oil pan too, then reinstall it with a new Felpro one piece gasket. This is pretty easy to do in a Mav. the crossmember unbolts, the pan install is easy, it comes with 4 plastic studs that screw into the 5/16" corner holes. You screw these in, pop the gasket into place, the studs hold the gasket in place, then install the oil pump and pan.
