Read replys to your post Mikef. A Lil research a good idea too.

347 is a stroked 302 as Rmiller stated.
    408 is a stroked 351w

it bolts into the same place as the 302.
headers, intake and fuel system are the biggest external mods. sometimes the valve covers are depending on what roller rockers you want to run.
with these mods sometimes it require a hood change.
you can build it from mild to wild.
mine was built to a 9:1 compression specs. for reg. pump gas. builder said a cam change and peel some off the head gaskets and mine would pick up another 50 HP. I was building mine for the street.
this is a pic of it when I picked it up from the builder...Coupe Performance.
my Wife and I did an 11 day, 3,300 mile trip one July vacation...:drive:...:chirp:

Like others have said, it's a 302 block, just bored and stroked internally, so it bolts right into your car like a 302. To get the full potential you should use headers. Think of it more as a 351 than a 302.

It just takes some different parts to support it and get the benefits of the extra cubic inches.

You'll be happier with the way a 302 based stroker (331 is what I keep leaning toward, there is some thought they rev better). Your selection of headers is greater than if you go to the larger 351W based motor and it will just fit better overall.

I currently have a 351W in my Comet and will likely switch back to a 302-based motor when the time comes. My headers are ridiculously tight fitting and probably no big benefit. When I did the swap in the mid-90s, there were not as many stroker kits out there like now.

    I can't imagine you being sorry you went with a 347 over a 302.

That is a combo I'm interested in. An 87 octane 302 that gets 20+ with a T5 or AOD.

I built my car as a sleeper and is stock on the outside. I love my 421 (stroked 351W) and have had it in my car for 15 years. It peaks out about 5200rpms, but the midrange torque is brutal. It is a C4 and finally had to rebuild it last year. It has a 2800 stall converter and is just getting into the torque curve at that rpms. It has a 3.50 tractionlok and a gearvendors OD so it cruises down the hiway @70 the rpms are about 2300. There is no substitute for cubic inches.
