obviously a forged crank is better... but will the cast hold up ? what sort of rpms are you running it at... power at the wheels? 1/4 mile times? thanks im just exploring my options. i called Roush today to get a price... they were closed for the weekend
simon , theres a company called enginekits(they have a site, just add .com) selling 347 long blocks for 4k to your door. but buildin a motor is almost as fun as blowin it up.
Depends what you wanna do with it. Cast crank is what comes stock in a 302, how many cranks have you heard of breaking. Supposedly the cast cranks are good to 500+ hp, right about the area where you have to be more worried about splitting a stock block. Used to pull hard to over 6500 rpm with AFR 185 heads, Performer RPM intake and cam. Never ran it on a track, power guesstimate around 420 at the flywheel. Here's where I got my kit, same parts as a Coast High/Probe but a little cheaper: http://www.cprparts.com/specials.html#Anchor-For-48739
It's going into the Fairmont. I'll prob end up helping or atleast "watching" part or all of the motor go into the car. Those guys are like family to me. Im anxious to see what the thing will run.
Well here is the deal, looking at that engine sitting on the floor yesterday, and having 70 degree weather, just had to try and install it myself. Time and prospects of getting the Maverick inside next for engine inspection and paint, etc, also fueled the urge. Then there is Jr's coming home and wanting to start on a highly modified 400M for his truck, Was going to call Andy to help, but being the season of frantic shopping, figured he would be working extra hours. "Got er done", have done so many engine changes etc, it was kind of routine on our race cars. Only real problem is this old body can't hack all that stretching and such, like it used too. Worst part was trying to get the engine mounts lined up while the damn hoist was leaking down, at the same time. On one hand, very proud of my efforts but also thinking how stupid it was to attempt it, for health and safety reasons. Now to finish the procedure(wiring, radiator, and all the other bolt ups, that need to be done. May have it fired up this weekend??? Still kind of enjoy doing it, but father time is just not being cooperative anymore. As with anything else, one day must say "enough of this manual labor, you old Ba****d. But for now, it is what keeps me going day to day, just a little slower. Todd does help when he can, after a full day of turning wrenches and putting up with irate customers, really not in the mood to work much in the shop, especially with the short hours and sometimes weather conditions. Hope to see you soon, Andy.
Glad to hear you got it in... But please call me next time. I am off on friday and saturdays and dont go in til 9 pm on sunday so I have no problem helping you. I enjoy the time over there, its like "working with dad" yanno. Learned a ton of stuff from you. Anyways, Jr will be home tomorrow nite late, i just talked to him. Check your PM's Anyways, i'll see you this weekend sometime for sure. But please call me if u need anything, I wont hesitate to quit what im doing (which is rarely anything) and come over and help out.
That's the first thing I thought of, Dave. I could visualize you crawling around underneath the car. Let these "whipper-snappers" help you out next time. Mehh...what's a little wait in the whole sceme of things. Listen to your own advice next time you think about doing something like that. (and by the way, Congratulations "you old Ba****d" )
Thanks Andy and Rick, my twisted brain still thinks I'm 20ish, but the rest of the anatomy, says different. Going to go to the shop and do a little work on the beast, just to pass the time when Jr. arrives later tonight. OOP"S, think I will take a little nap first, he he he.
lol yea let us "whipper-snappers" help next time. lol I might learn something. Anyways, i'll see you later 2nite, and if not i'll see you tomorrow for sure. Have a good one
