I (like most other people) agree with Old Guy. I ran my 8 inch (stock axles) and was lifting my left front off the ground.

But like all good things I ended up with a 9 inch, parts are cheaper and everyone has them. What I did was to take a 9 inch housing and my 8 inch housing into a friend who does rearends and he cut the last 7 to 9 inches off the tubes of my 8 inch and put them on my 9 inch making it the same lenght as my OEM rear.
Now I have a 9 inch just like my old 8 inch and can still use my 8 inch axles.
A 28 spline axle is the same for either a 8 inch or 9 inch.

I use 28 inch tires and a 4.11 gear I cross the traps at 6800 but my motor is build to do that. If you are thinking of bigger and better go with the lower gear now that way you won't have to change later on. I used 4.11 with a 26 inch tire for about 2 years and never ran out of motor and then my combo was a lot closer to yours.

My car is the one with the shelby lights.
