Derek, I watched your video and am curious how you like that hurst shifter stick. I'm still having trouble deciding which stick shape to go with. The difference between your car and mine is that I've got buckets and a Granada console. Do you feel like you're reaching forward a lot for 3rd and 5th?

I've done the T5 swap and love it. Running 3.55 in the rear puts me at 2300ish at 80mph and still getting 19-20 mpg. Drove it to the Power Tour in 06 and Biloxi Cruisin the coast in 07. Its great on the hwy. First gear is a little short but oh well. I would love to swap to a close ratio setup with a 2.95 first gear but I'll have to fry this one first. :)

I have bucket seats and a Hurst long handle shifter with less bend than Dereks and have no issues reaching 3rd and 5th gears.

A note on using the cable conversion:

I have the cable linkage/conversion setup from MustangSteve on my car. My long tube headers fried the cable. I need a longer cable to make it work better but according to MS there is not one available. I have since gotten another one and used doubled up spark plug heat shields on the area that is closest to the headers. Its seams to be working alright but have not been able to put much time into it yet. There is a thread on this board somewhere where someone made there own cable that is a few inches longer and it worked out great. If you can do that then it would be the way to go.

    3speed to 5

My Comet has a 3 speed, I like it either way coz i love to drive stick. My husband says I should do a 4 or 5 speed, which would better? (probably 5?) and which would be easier to install? I'm still learning this stuff so don't give me too hard time!

If you are going to convert from a factory 3 speed to a 4 or 5 there are advantages to both... The 4 speed is normally stronger than the 5 speed as you may have read already. You can get a close ratio 4 speed that is real nice in a street/strip car or the ultra wide ratio that is basically a 3 speed with 4th being an overdrive gear.

The 5 speed is great for a daily driver and occasional run down the track, but unless you get a built 5 speed they are generally a weak link if yu are putting out a lot of HP

this is from fordmuscle.com and modern driveline.

    T5 Evolution

    Borg Warner/Tremec World Class T5
Ford began using the Borg-Warner designed T5 in small passenger cars in the early 80's. However these early non-World class (NWC) models weren't suited to handle the power of modified V8 engines, and it wasn't until the availability of the World-Class (WC) T5 gearboxes designed for the new fuel injected 5.0L Mustangs that the popularity of the transmission took off. Compared to NWC T5's the WC's benefit from needle bearings under the gears and tapered roller countershaft bearings for reduced friction. This change also allows the later to run considerable less viscous ATF fluid rather than heavy gear oil. The blocking rings are upgraded from brass to fiber lined steel for smoother gear synchronization. The early WC T5 versions were rated to handle 265 lb-ft of torque, while subsequent changes to gear material and size in 1990 bumped the torque rating to 300 lb-ft. The 1993 Cobra T5 was rated to handle 310 lb-ft, while Ford Racing's aftermarket "T5-Z" could handle 335 lb-ft as a result of a smaller first gear (2.95:1 compared to 3.35:1) and stronger steel.

I love the long hurst stick very comfortable.Don't know what it's out of bought it off EBAY.I really didn't want a short 5.0 mustang style shifter i find the trans feels real notchy with the shorter shifter, with the long stick i have you can row through the gears as smooth as butter.Plus i really wanted to keep the old 4 speed look.
