I'm going to inquire about getting the number of 6 cyl Comet GT's. Over at the Vintage Mustang Forum they reported it cost about $80 for a special request. His website says he isn't doing them right now though. I'll let you know what I find out. I find it hard to believe though that there were only 661 with my Paint and trim code. I would have thought that there would be more Competition Blue with black bucket cars out of the 13,677 GT's. - Matt
Like Craig and Dan said, the 16,393 is how many Comets of ALL body styles equipped with the 200/C4. It doesn't show how many GT's came with that combo. I feel sure it's a small number. It really doesn't surprise me that there were so few of the Competition Blue GT's either. Alot of the colors we consider attractive today weren't nearly as popular then. I have a feeling the survival rate for the more colorful cars is less too. I'd imagine that younger buyers opted for the brighter colors and older ones the more sedate colors. Younger buyers were more likely to beat on the cars or wreck them. I think that's why you see more ultra-low mileage 4-doors going up for sale now too; those buyers were often older too. Matt, I hope you're able to get the breakdown for the 6-cyl GT's. It will be very interesting to know. Good luck!
I sometimes wonder how accurate the Marti reports are? My 73 is one of 151 with the same trim & paint code, and my 74 is one of 198 with the same trim & paint code. I've been going to Email them and ask if thats total production between St.Thomas & Kansas & Dearborn? or just whatever plant either car came from?? Then if you could add the number of V-8 automatic cars to V-8 standard, plus the sixes in either transmission, what numbers would you get, compared to the total production number that have been listed in the past???
You have a Grabber .... so your 73 is 1 of 151 Grabbers not all Mavericks. Same goes for your 74 .... I would think your 73 paint is rare ... most all 73 Grabbers I see are WHITE on TOP and COLOR on Bottom ... that is how they are displayed in the Sales Brochures also ...
Yeah, but do you think the numbers are for all assembly plants? or just the one it was produced at? I think I might email them and see.
Well, I can say that there are only 660 possible Competition Blue with Black bucket seat cars left in existance. My uncle's car was totaled back in the late 70's. His was 71 GT, Competition Blue, Black Buckets, 302, 3 spd. He and my aunt took me everywhere with them in that car. So as for ever selling this one. Probably not. I've wanted one like this since I got my license. - Matt
Almost 5% Your Competition blue had lots of competition on the order sheet: black, white, bright red, light blue, dark metallic blue, light metallic blue, grabber green/lime,light metallic green, glamour green metallic(dark), yellow, beige, yellowish tan and more. I agree with part of Chuck's comments above. Bright red is the dominant color in the '71-'75 GT Registry at this time. I suspect that the more popular colors on the showroom floor which brought more sales were the same colors that were popular with people looking for a car to fix up in the early 80's and 90's when they were still relatively plentiful. Thus the popular colors were saved and fixed up or restored as opposed to letting them rot into the ground as many have. I know when we were looking for a car for me back in '83/'84 we passed on a couple of Grabbers/GT's that were not appealing to me. Ex. a beige never gonna shine '72 GT that was in very good shape. Seth
I would say the most popular color GT's and Grabbers were the colors Ford chose to put in the Sales Brochures. For 71 ... My Paint and Stripe Scheme is on the cover and on the inside ... and look at the numbers on my Marti Report ... Out of 38,963 Grabbers .. 8,453 were bright red ... just like the brochure.
I just ordered mine, I got the basic, it was $17, plus I got the door tag which was an additional $25. I didnt even have that to go by to get a rudimentary idea of what my car came with. I do know it was that awful freudian gilt(nasty dark gold color) when new, with black interior. I had to cut through 7 layers of paint to find that. There are several different levels of the Marti report, check it out here: http://www.martiauto.com/
