So I order a Marti Report for my old Comet project that I have been working on and collecting parts for and it appears its a GT. Couple of questions though as it has some odd options in my opinion. I've ordered a deluxe Marti report to get some stats on it. I didn't think you could get a vinyl top, bench seat 3spd on the floor in a GT? Interested in what you guys think. - Matt

Lots of vinyl topped cars. Interesting it was not ordered with buckets with the floor shift, but I had a 71 grabber the same way, bench with floor shift.

I bet it is going to be a 1 of some low number.

Here's hoping it that holy grail like the 71 Cuda on that Fired Up Garage Show. I can see it now, ultra rare bench seat 3 speed, triple black 1971 Comet GT. Time to snap back to reality. Maybe I could sale it to them and by a finished car ;) - Matt

As far as I knew bucket seats were standard equipment on Comet GT's? Also if the car was a floor shift it should be listed in the options.

It will be interesting to see the deluxe Marti Report. Definitely seems to be a very unusual combo.

Do you have any pics of the car? Also my uncle's '71 Comet GT has a factory black vinyl top on it.

Here's a copy of the deluxe report. It looks like it indeed was originally a column shift 3 spd bench seat. Probably a little bit more rare on a GT I would think. The car is totally stripped to bare metal and that's how I got it, so I don't have any pics of it's previous life. Looks like it was converted to floor shift at one point, so no point in looking for the parts to try and put it back. I do have factory buckets, tracks and floor bracing to put back in it as well. I didn't know it was originally a GT, but had collected the rest of the parts needed to convert it after I sold my other GT. - Matt

With only 248 made with the paint/trim codes out of the entire 54K Comet 2 doors made that year I would bet that there weren't many GT's made with black paint and a black bench seat!

What color stripes are you going to put on the car? The black with silver stripe combo is one of my favorites!

Really glad to see this report. It proves that some GT's did have column shifts with bench seats. As I have said for years.

Can't beat a black GT with silver stripes. My first one was a 71 black with silver stripes. I bought it new. 302, C4 with black interior. I now have a GT clone or as they say at Barrett-Jackson recreation. It's a 72 black with silver stripes. Black interior. I built it myself from 3 different cars.

Here is a picture of my uncle's 59K mile '71 Comet GT Deluxe Marti Report. It also has a 8A trim code and his car has the original black bucket seats in it.

I would contact Kevin Marti and ask him to check that out.

tried to look it up in the master parts catalog but failed somehow...
the trim code for all black vinyl is 8A up to 71, and LA from 72 on.
can't quite make out whether it's bench or bucket, the manual is confusing me at that point :hmmm:
