I have never seen any primer or undercoating stay put for a really long time without either rusting through or pealing up. I was going to just coat what I could with Rust Bullet using a brush, while my torque boxes were exposed, and once sealed up, drill a hole and use the injected spray stuff. Any rust encapsulator hardens into a really hard shell and grips the rust. If you look at "my images" and see the encapsulator that I brushed into the guts of my cowl you can see what a hard shine it has. It's like iron. I really don't want to do this ever again
I doubt that Rust Bullet would survive welding right at the seams. The bulk of it would likely be OK though. I would use the weld-through primer closest to the welds, and after, like Bob suggested, coat the inside with panel protectant. Maybe drill a hole that you can use a hardware plug in, and spray the stuff in through there. Then, after all your panels are in place, seam seal all the joints.
Sounds like i better order some rust bullet. I guess i will come back to floor pans, for the time being i will work on the cowls. Thanks for the input. Nate
And it doesn't have to be Rust Bullet - if you can find a better deal on POR 15 get that - they both work great
Sounds great i will need some for my cowls when i get that far, so i probably should order some this week. Thanks for the input
Well i started messing around with the cowls today. I decided to tackle the drivers side first since that would be a little easier. Here is a couple pictures i still got to finish welding and grinding every thing down.
Looks good and also looks very familier - only difference is I had 2 vent rings to contend with since I do not factory air in mine Don't forget to wire brush the rest of the cowl while you're in there. I found a bunch of little pin holes after I wire brushed mine. I used J B weld on the worse ones and the Rust Bullet first coat filled the little tiny ones nicely. The second coat sealed everything solid.
This work on the cowls is exactly what will save a car that many others would throw their hands in the air and walk away from. Way to go!
Thank You Well honestly it has not been nothing crazy yet, but i have not got to the other side yet. The worse part is going to be reassembling it, welding or panel adhesive. I have not decided my plan of attack but i better decide soon. Nate
Well guys i have not got to much done in the last couple days. I am always getting side tracked with this car. I like to fabricate stuff so i started messing around with where the fender mounts on the inner fender area. Here is a couple pictures of the mess i started, i keep finding myself at a hold up cause of needing Rust Bullet. But good news i got some ordered last night, so hopefully it will be here soon.
Looks awesome, I wish I had you're sheetmetal and welding skills. I could sure use it, keep us posted Bossed
Well guys its been almost two weeks since i have touched the car. I got out to the garage and started after some projects i have not finished. I covered the bottom side of the fender apron mounts with rust bullet, then put them into to place and welded them in. Also started some fabrication for the driver side apron towards the radiator support were i have some rust.
Ddid u fab the panel in pix 1? In pix 4, what is that fresh air repair panel for? Mustang? Ur doing a gud job.
