Looks good. I'm working on the same side right now.. I've decided to weld the seam infront of the rear wheel where the rocker meets the quarter and then welded the marker light up as well...my lower peice you just clamped on I tacked in place the other night. And for me I found it was better to weld it from the inside of the trunk.. I got a better looking Finnish/less clean up on the outside. Quick grind on the inside and it was good to go, cause really..who's looking in your trunk? But that's just what worked for me, something else might work better for you..just make sure it's clean metal to weld to on the inside if you choose to go that way. Looking forward to see how it turns out.
welded it up and i also welded on the inside seemed to be cleaner route. i am also doing awat with the marker lights i just havent made the patch for it yet. soon as im done with it i will post a couple more pics.
getting the body line correct is whats fighting me the most right now. just think i still have to do all this to the other side.
Have you put a line of tape along the line and blocked up to it, once that's close, remove the tape and put it back on the body line so you can block down to it, this should give you a very straight and crisp line you may have to do this a couple times but you will get it, or it will be extemely close and no one should really be able to tell. I will be using the tape line when I do mine as well.. And just did it last weekend on my dads chevelle.. Had a door ding on his door right on the body line.. Took time to build it up and block but it came out very nice. I just had a look at your pics..for me it's easier if I lay filler over a large area... Yes I might sand it all off but I find I don't have a lot of highs and lows.. Just a fair bit of sanding.. I use my air board to get it close and then out comes the durablocks. I am by no means a body man at all.. This is just the way I do it and there is probably 10 ways that work better and may be easier.. This is what works for me.. Love that you welded up the marker light as well, good job!
didnt do tape but i have blocked the top panel and then the lower panel to give me the body line and then lightly massaging it to a curve to mach the orignal line. i will try the tape trick and see that works better for me thanks. i did coat almost the complete panel with bondo and blocked back off to where its at to try to get it as smooth as possiable. im with you also i like them better with no marker lights.
Under your user name, you say that you have a 71 Maverick project - if that is referring to the same car that you are working on in this thread, you actually have a 1970 Maverick - the only Maverick with a drop in gas tank is the 1970

Looks awesome keep up the good work.. I have to make a patch for that Trunk spot as well by the wheel well there Mind you mine is only a 2"x3" patch.
yeah winter time makes it rough. thanks im not that great at patch work but learning as i go. they cut the rear from a 70 and put it on this one but must of being a long time ago because its under about 5 coats of paint and one is the orignal brown color it came factory with. im thinking maybe in the 70's it was rearended and they clipped it back then since no parts were available.
i wish mine was only a small patch but it wasnt to bad once i got started on it. im kinda of enjoying bringing this one back to life. reminds me of my wifes firebird when i did year a few years ago. it was also clipped in the back a long time ago like this one.thanks for compliment.
