I have been studying eBay cars for a while...
All the 74 Ford/Mercs have the early wheel, while all the 76s have the late wheel.

The only 75 that I have been able to find had an early wheel.
So this, combined with the original owner statements, are very encouraging!
The wheel might be another defining factor.

I am not counting cars like Stang2, Pinto, or Capri.
I don't think they parallel Mav/Coms too well.
I have been looking at Mavs, Comets, LTDs, Torinos, Elites, Cougars, T-birds, etc...
They all seem to follow the same trends on these issues.

Just for comparison, this Torino Elite (76) has a wheel very close to what Mavs had in 76.
This is the best pic I could find.
All the other 76 up FoMoCos had the much fancier cruise control wheels, which are not good comparisons to the Maverick wheels, even though they have the same general shape.

    Ok,my '75 4dr has the following;
    the later wheel
    duraspark(w/the small cap)
    no cats
    302 w/the only 4 qt. oilpan I've ever seen on a v8
    clear frosted park lights w/crosshairs
    FORD letters on hood/deck
3 spd on column-had to have it in reverse to get the key out
    4 wheel drums
    100 mph speedo
and my '75 2dr has all the same as above, except it(3 spd on column also)doesn't have to be in reverse to get key out(don't know if this feature is broken or just not on this one). It's a 200 car and doesn't appear to have had a cat on it.It's build date is 3/75,sorry I don't have a date for the 4dr,it's up on the hill.

Not sure what you mean by seatbelt interlock. The 4dr if it had it was probably unhooked because the buzzer never worked on it.The 2dr had a buzzer, but you could start it w/o having a belt on,is this what you mean?

    Tim...
Well, the 2 door is definately borderline early with a March build.
    Mine is about March also.

What is with the 100 mph speedo though?

The only column shift I had was my 72. It's floor shift now... But the original shifter had to be up to get the key out. Up and to you was reverse IIRC.
Seems like your safety might be broken or worn out.

Your 2 door has a late steering wheel?

I don't know whats up w/the 100 mph speedos,'cept they both got 'em:huh:.Yes,the 2 dr does have the later type wheel. You're probably right about the safety being broken or worn out, definately some wear/slack in the collar...

Now I am second guessing my speedo. :(
I could have sworn it was 120...
The car is in my werehouse about 2 miles away, so I can't just run out and look.

I do know for sure it is early style and has the early cable.

I know it's not the black and white later version with the 85 mph reading.
