no, that is not the question but feel free to coment...be nice...
question is....jeg's lists.."earls' #10 crush washers (10)." are these the ones for the bolts that hold the "chunk" in? when we did the 3.00 swap we didn't put the washers back on at the time, now it weeps oil. thought it might be the new gasket at first but remembered about the lack of the washers.
    ...thanks...frank...:bouncy:

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it was one of those questions that wife asks that you can't answer and maintain peace.

But since Frank asked it, I'm sure we can come with some good answers. C'mon everyone give him your best shot. I'm sick at home, today and will have to wait to answer Frank. I want to take my time and really come up with something good.:evilsmile

Frank; here is what I got from Bill Alexander...I will be there at about 6:45am on Saturday, so I can get set up. See you then!

As far as the weather, (we never say the "R" word), honestly it really just depends on the event itself. If that unfortunate situation occurs we make a decision as to at what point, where we were in the event, etc...but the last report I saw it really looks to be a great weekend!
The gates open at 10A Friday, 7A Saturday & 8A Sunday.

You really don't need those crush washers. Just torque the bolts to the proper spec and it'll be fine...

Are you referring to a "crush sleeve" which goes on the pinion? I've never heard of "crush washers" !??

I would say not having the washers on the studs is not that big of a deal and probably wouldn't cause a leak, did you use a gasket or just silicone it??

I think silicone sucks as a sealant. I use #2 Permatex and I have never had a leak because of it.

I think the reason they are called crush washers, is that they were copper and compressed to form a seal. They are a pain to get off the first time and I have never put any back on. If the housing is cleaned good and the stud threads included, then I wire wheel the nuts also. Put a light bead of silicone around the gasket surface of the housing, and have always had good luck with no leaks.

I used some of the copper washers when i put myn rear end back together. Got mine at Car Quest. They were a little pricey....like a dollar each or something.

I got mine at O Reillys and yeah like Craig said, bout a buck a piece. Mine doesnt leak but I used some silicone too. Mine will weep just a bit during the hottest weather but I am using synthetic gear lube and it will leak before regular GL5. I figured since they were there to begin with, they needed to be used.

Frank, that price sounds correct if not a bit of a bargain.

I second that. Those things are PITA and I usually end up dropping them in the pan of oil when i tear a rearend apart and leave them there. Done it on 9'' and my moms rearend in her 2000 GMC jimmy. She was dead set on a new gasket, then everyone told her to use the good silicone. Thats what we ended up doing and works great. Plus the gaskets are expensive, and from what i read here... 3 bucks for 10 washers, forget that. I can get a tube of silicone and do several rearends for that much
