Only advantage to an amp meter is that if it is wired correctly, it will show you if there is a drain on the battery. Thats something that a volt meter will not detect.
i really dont know but i have two extra laying around i have a mech. one on there and i'll be adding an electric. i'm kepping the gauges it has, but i wanted more i think i'll just put the amp gauge in there but only hook up the light...
But it's not worth the headaches (or potential headaches). A Volt meter tells you if your system is under-charging or over-charging. That's all you really need...
I agree with that. However amp gauges can be perfectly safe if installed correctly with the proper wire size, properly insulated, and properly secured. Most people dont. They use undersized wire and run it where it is exposed to edges that can cut into the insulation. A prime example I've seen is running it through a hole in the firewall with no rubber grommet. Or leaving the wire loosely bundled under the dash where there are countless sharp edges.
I have mounted amp gauges next to the battery to relieve the possibility of a short and fire. Then have a volt gauge inside readily readable. Why would one want one over the other? Well volts will tell you if it is charging but not how much is actually flowing. Water may have lotsa pressure(volts) but may not be flowing to where it is intended, drain on the battery short etc....
i should have explained it better.I'm going to be putting another gauge pod next to the one thats alredy there. In the first hole i'll put in the amp gauge then in the second i'm going to put a cig. lighter and the last one will have another water gauge. PS: heres a pic of roberto's gauges
This just isn't doin it for me. I pick up my set on Sat morning. I'll post the out come when it happens.
Because i like how they light up at night Now that i think about it i better just put a trans temp and vacumm gauge since its required in cali....even thought 99% of cars dont have one...
