    Problem Solved?

If your balance problem is solved, just ignore this. But, if not, a couple of comments.

. Your engine came out of a '74 but it could have been a later, 50 oz imbalance.

. The picture of your new balancer shows the front side. Counterweights are cut into the back side. Is the back side all uniform or is part cut out for a counterweight? If there's no counterweight, I wonder if its zero imbalance for a 6 cyl.

. Did your engine come with a balancer? If yes, do you still have it? You might compare it with the pictures I posted. Very likely its correct for your engine and maybe it would tell you what you need.

best thing to do is get a zero balance dampner then remove the weight from the flywheel and have the rotating assy balanced......unless they botch the job at machine shop. Problem fixed......I have even mundane rebuilds balanced...... but in those cases I use stock dampner and flywheel....if something is off they will catch at make it right...!!!

Around 81-82...it is my understanding that there is some "gray area" here, that's why I recommended a known 28 oz flexplate even though it is from a 351. From a flexplate standpoint, a 302 and a 351 are the same as far as bolt on fit is concerned.

    Hey 55Crownvic:
Unless your motor was converted to a stroker motor when rebuilt , more than likely the balancing would remain at the stock "28 oz". The fact that you bolted a "50" oz. flexplate on and the vibration increased, also leads me to believe that the motor remained a "28 oz." motor through the rebuild process. Since you state you did have a slight vibration problem upon first starting the engine, I would check to be sure that your professional products harmonic balancer is IN FACT a 28 oz.unit.
I believe you said you started the car with open headers . This will shake the car and floor area and could also be the vibration you felt originally. I hope this helps identify the problem and leads to a solution. Bill

That's what my machine shop offered too. I asked if they could check the balance on the flexplate and only thing they suggested was for me to pull the engine, strip it to the long block and they could balance the whole rotating assembly. Not what I had in mind. So, I went home and came up with a way to check the flexplate. If anyone is interested, I can email the procedure I used.

Since I really dont know what this balancer is and am sure my rebuild guy wont either, I am going to get a stock HB from Autozone or Advance and a FRA 205 flexplate, then go from there. I have been too busy at work these last two days to get them ordered so will try and do this tommorow. Thanx for all the input, thats why I love this site.

Thanks for the tips guys, and Bill, the new flexplate seems to be the perfect setup. I havent driven the car yet as it is waaayyy to loud for my neighborhood, but later this week I hope to. Anyway the motor is much smoother now with the FRA205 flexplate, THANK YOU!!!! I will wait for the exhaust before ordering a different harmonic balancer.:thumbs2:
