When I got my 73 comet I noticed the alt light stayed on so I drove it till it died on me, after I charged the battery and replaced the alternator the ligjt still stayed on, drove it again for about two days with the light still on and today it cranked but no start, could it be a bad battery not holding a charge? Please help, don't know much of these cars, it's my first and I'm super excited to start driving it. Thanks
If it cranks the battery has charge. Charge issue probably regulator or blown fuse link between battery and alternator. Fuse link is commonly bad if jumper cables or battery connections have been reversed.
The fuse link is a short length of wire(around 6") that's a smaller gauge than the main harness it's mounted in. It is designed to save main wiring in event of a short. With engine OFF, use a test light from battery negative to larger terminal(batt) on alt, if light burns link is OK.
Did you get the old alt tested??? May be in need of a new voltage regulator (Common issue) Also...May want to get the new alt tested...Just because its new don't mean its good...Good luck!!!
Thank you, yes I had the old one tested and it was shot, I haven't tested the new one, I'm going to get the battery tes in a few
So I had the battery and alternator tested and they both tested good, no problems, even checked with the voltage meter when I put everything back on, the alt light now goes off, but when I'm driving and I hit bumpy roads, the light flickers, loose wiring?? Or did I not tighten the alternator tighter??
I did notice when I put the alternator back it was a bit loose when put the connectors back on, I'll recheck it, thank you.
