    wow that's really........strange.......

Seeing as how factory sports cars usually have higher back ends than front ends I would have assumed that raising the back end a little would be MORE pressure onto the back giving better rear wheel traction.

And as for safety......I don't understand what is so dangerous about the shackle setup....especially since it is a factory component.

Lol, I don't see the difference. So you're saying someone added this shackle type leaf spring setup to the car?

Those adjustable shackles were made for two purposes:

To jack a car up to make it look meaner or clear over size tires ...

or to bring a car back up to stock height when old saggy springs drop it down ...

That's interesting to know. In that case I guess I'll just keep it where it is.

"In that case" you should remove them and put factory shackles back on. Leaving those on the car WILL eventually tear up your frame rails and render the car useless.

IF I were going to HAVE....

...to leave them on, I would take the sawzall
    and cut them off.

I laugh like heck everytime I see them. They
are totally unstable, I don't know why they
    are made.

Listen to Craig. Replace them with stock
shackles and get new springs or spring
helpers, add another leaf or re-arch.
    Anything but those things.
In fact, IF I still have a spare set, and I
may have kept them, you can have them.
I'll even pay the postage. I will look for them
    this Sat. afternoon.

    Good luck with your project.

I thought using shackles went away with the '70s. Every car that I knew about with shackles eventually had leaf springs with no arch, a droopy, unstable rear suspension, and a soft, spongy ride. In short, they turn your performance car into a dud.

Shackle lifts always were and always will be for the uninformed, (I'm being very polite). I grew up in the late 60's early 70's Muscle car era. Not one hot car that I ever knew or seen, had shackle lifts on them.

    Just another unsuccessful shackle story

I got together with some friends this past weekend. I showed my one friend the Maverick calender and he really enjoyed looking at all the Mavericks and Comets. Back in high school we both had Mavericks, I had a blue 72' 2 door and he had a Sprint, so we started talking about the good old days.

His Sprint had a shackle lift kit on it when he bought it. He hated it on his car, he hadn't had the car very long, and due to the stress caused by the extended shackles on the car it literally fatigued the metal that the shackles were attached to so bad, that after several unsuccesful attempts of repairing it he finally got rid of the car. Ripped right through the trunk! He said this weekend if it wasn't for the lift kit, he would not gotten rid of it. :(
