Get that front bumper, regardless of condition. Very hard to get. Not only front bumper, but the frame brackets, too. Comets have an extra pair of inner brackets that support the nose of the bumper. The other bumper brackets are standard Maverick parts. Grab the rear bumper and brackets, too. Front valance. Lights inside the grille. I believe the front door hinges are the same. Also, the hinges should be able to be used on either side, just flip them. A passenger side hinge is usually a lot fresher than the driver side, and a better candidate to repin and put new bushings in. Early Comet taillights are different than later, the backup lens is smaller.
Yesterday, I dropped out the rear end, headers, exhaust, driveshaft, and leaf springs and prepped for the engine/tranny removal today. One of the U-joint cups came apart in my hand as I was removing the driveshaft. Today, I ripped out the heart of the beast (tranny and engine), came out very smooth. The only thing left now is to put it on my trailer and drag it down to a metal recycler to be turned into chinese I-beams, or whatever it is they do with recycled cars these days.
Dang! Look at that perfect battery apron! Most of them got eaten up by battery acid. Probably not "perfect", but it looks solid in the picture. LOL.
Funny that you mention that. It's definitely not rusted out like a lot of them are. But, the car took a good impact in that corner, which I believe crumpled in the apron/battery tray. I'll have to closely compare it to my grabber and see if it's salvageable or not.
I put up a few parts that I pulled off of this car in the classifieds section if anybody's interested: http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/1971-mercury-comet-parts.118314/
