You prolly damaged the water pump drive shaft when you broke your nail on the fan earlier. Man, that's weird for sure. Glad you can 'get her done' though!
That pump had to lock up solid for that to happen. Is the pump full of rusty water and crud? A buddy of mine suggested when we just rebuilt mine to use a 50/50 solution of distilled water and anti-freeze. He says it does not build up sludge as bad with no chemicals or minerals in the water. Sorry to see all the damage. I'm glad you weren't standing over it adjusting something when it let go. Seth
I think it was a combination of a cracked housing and either an out of balance fan or pulley pulled too far to one side. The previous owner had three groove pulleys, but only an alternator. The pump was moving water. Something unbalannced externally had to cause this, along with a weakened housing. I'll know more once I get it out and can look it over.
Hawko, I still think that it had to lock up inside, and the fan belt torque ripped it out. Even a weak housing alone wouldn't fail instantly like that IMO. Either way, again I am glad you weren't setting your time or tuning your carb when that let go. Seth
Thanks. I was sitting in the driver seat. Regardless of what done it, it got done good. It was a new experience for me.
WOW!! Sorry to see that!! Glad YOU are okay, and that the car is not worse. Hope you get is back together soon, and I would contact the manufacturor of that waterpump. JMO. Take care! Preston
Preston, I just bought that car a few weeks ago. There is no telling how long that water pump has been on there. The lower hose looked like and felt like it had been on there for about as long as you've been living. The lower snout on the water pump had not been cleaned off in years. I'm going to keep that pump, fan, and radiator for show 'n tell for years to come.
Terry; the car the engine came from was a factory a/c car, and the 3 groove lower pulley was stock. That shouldn't have broken the pump on it's own. I think the pump was just bad, seized up and broke the snout off. Unless the pulleys are bent, they should be ok. I have a 3 groove pulley on my car, and only use 2, and it seems fine. Let me know if I can help. Later,
I drove my truck about 50 miles home with a water pump so bad it had about an inch of play in it when I got home. Boy did it rattle those last 50 miles....but didn't break!!
Even when water pumps sieze, they usually just spin the belt. Good thing there was no sheet metal damage.
