All of mine have expired since I created this thread. I only work on my cars now and a select few. Since I started my business Royal Gates, i'm MUCH happier.
Some say it's a "piece of paper", but to some it's a selling tool. It was mine and I got to work at several places only because of the piece of paper.
It is my choice to allow them to expire cause the auto service industry does not even come close to compensating for the effort keeping them or even working on vehicles. There going broke and it's not from their pay to the tech.

i was a ase master tech with advanced engien specialist and under car specialist. i did work at pepboys from 99 to 01. they increased pay with every ase cert so i got all the ones i could. gean you nailed it when said the pepole inside was the problem there. i loved working on the car but hated walking into the store and dealing with the innept servic writers and mangers.
the ase certs were pretty worthless once i started specializeing in differentials and opened my own shop. the public doesnt have a clue of what ase is. ase used to have advertising to promote going to ase certifyed mechanics but now they just take the huge amount of money the get from testing and pocket it. well they may put some stickers on some race car here and there.

I'm currently working on getting my ASE Cert (in college right now) but I had considered becoming a lineman for the RECC. They have a program at my college to train you in and guarntee you a job once you complete the program (or so I've been told). I also have a friend at Alton Blakley in Somerset that is the Manager for their body shop, so maybe he can help me get my foot in the door. So I may end up getting my ASE that route if possible, which ever way is faster.

If all else fails I guess there's always the military. :(

I was going to register with Lincoln Tech, I toured it twice and spoke with them several times. I decided to get a job in the field and landed Pep Boys (again). I struggled to keep my job for two years then took 6 tests and passed 4 on the 1st round. Then Pep Boys wanted to keep me as a mechanic... the rest is a book story. Anyway, what i'm saying is, you can take the tests by aquireing work history, at least it was that way back then. One only needed two years or a combination of school and work. I chose to keep my 15k and earn money learning what I have a knack for.
At one point I went to a local community college for brakes and suspension. I quit when I was having to correct the teacher who acted like a total jerk and I found out he had no ASE either. Good luck.
    Sorry for the hijack

I did the Tech College thing for 2 years. Got my ASE in brakes & have had it for 12 years. Don't think I'll renew. I just work on my own cars now....

i do recomend geting and having ase certs when your a new mechanic trying to get a job. most dealerships and chain repair stores look for them and pay more for each one you have.
