Will a floor shift from a '74 Maverick fit on a '71 Maverick? I ask because the transmission hump looks taller on the '74.

Has anyone done this switch-over? What should I know before hacking into the floorboard?

Yes, it will fit. The transmission tunnel from '71 and up is the same in that area. You will need to get the plate that is under the carpet that bolts to the transmission tunnel from the '74 and put it on the '71. Also, if the '71 is a column shift car, I believe you will need to get the arm off the side of the transmission of the '74 and swap it to the '71. You have to remove the transmission pan and drop the valve body on both cars in order to do that.

i bolted mine right to the floor.then made an adapter for the transmission. that way did not have to drop the pan.

it moves the shifting point from the bottom to the top. same as when you drop the pan and flip the lever. just a lot less hassle

i beleive a shifter from a pinto or mustang 11 will also work. i myself used a later pinto unit because it was all i could find at the time. it has a neutral lock out. i like this because in my 72 gt i constantly forgot that i was in drive, and would shift into neutral from drive in street racing all the time! LOL!

C4 variation pays off (for once)

Just did a swap in a column shift car. The new tranny had come from a floor shift car, but the shift lever on the side of the tranny had a double ended bracket (one end pointing down for column shift, one pointing up for floor shift) so I didn't have to change anything! How lucky can a guy be?

my 72 had the double but my 77 had the single if i remember correctly! i just went down to the local tranny shop and they gave me one. don't flip the lever. i'm sure the arm length is a little different?

Yes, the ends looked different to me, so I wouldn't attempt it unless you measure them out to be sure, I'm no expert, but from what I've read the flip can be done on the AOD, but that may be sketchy too. Always measure if you are unsure, I don't know how much the linkage can be adjusted... If you're ever looking thru a pile of cores for one to rebuild, look for that double ended linkage, could come in handy later. Also, the thickness of the bracket may be different from year to year, so if you cannot reuse the plastic clip the stud rides in, or if it is missing, an e-clip on the backside will work, fits the notch in the stud okay so the thickness won't matter.
