It boils and steam is leaking like a volcano..., must check the thermostat but I been rehearsing the drums all day, and all it does is rains and storms over here right now...
Make sure that your radiator cap is in good shape. Sometimes if the spring in it is weak it doesn't hold the pressure enough to keep the water from boiling.
Opened up the thermo housing and guess what(you must think I´m a complete fool by now) there was no thermostat inside, what have this guy been doing to this fine piece of machinery, maybe it´s time to take out the wrench and and visit him at night time... As usual I managed to crack one of te bolts holding the theromo housing, so I spent most of yesterday trying to drill it out, but it really went fine in the end...
How do I use a cooling system flush, do I put it in and start it up and let it do the job? Bought the anti freeze now as well, I want to drive my baby not just look at her all the time.. Ideally you want a 50/50 mix of water/anti freeze.Drain your radiator, replace your thermostat, flush your cooling system with a good cooling system flush. Then put fresh coolant mix in system and see what happens.Good luck.[/quote]
I usually drain all the fluid out of the car, fill it with fresh water, maybe add a quart or so of some cleaner that you can add put out by the Antifreeze companies. Run it until it is warm, not hot, just to where the water is going around really good. Drain it again. Repeat if you are really worried about it. Then fill it back up with 50/50 run it, let it cool down, and top it off with 50/50.
Ok now!!! New thermostat (thanks scott), and used the cooler system flush twice, fixed the anti-frezze and made a cocktail going 50/50 with water, but it´s still boiling...? Any more ideas?
Is it boiling over and coming out the overflow tube? Try a new cap. If you haven't already. (I am too lazy today to reread the entire thread). Should be running fine by this time...
Yes it´s coming out of the tube, and the cap is screaming, I can hear the water boiling inside the upper radiatorhose as well...
Replace the radiator cap.Make sure there are no air pockets in the cooling system. They tend to trap air at the low point while filling and it has to be worked out of the system.Did you get alot of crud coming out when you flushed the system???The cooling system should hold 9.7 quarts if it took less you may have a plugged up radiator/engine block or an air pocket that needs to be burped out of the system.Hopefully you just have a bad radiator cap and replacing it will put you on the road.Good luck.
The coolant (antifreeze) will boil, but it raises the boiling point of water. So, it will still boil, but it just takes more heat to make it do so. Just to toss this out and cancel potential problems...Next time you start it cold, leave the cap off and watch the water inside the radiator. Make sure it is full to within 1" of the top. At some point a few minutes after starting, the water should start to move pretty quickly across the top of the radiator. You will see it flowing in there pretty good. I am wondering if you water pump is not moving your water for some reason... or at least not moving it fast enough.
What happen to the old thinking that if the thermo was not in the car and your car over heats, then the problem is not the thermo?? I would think that your problem is a water pump or a blockage somewhere.
I'm readign this with great interest because, I was driving my car a couple of weeks back and noticed antiffresse smell, i could hear a groaning noise, and see steam coming out of the overfloaw hose, I'll stand back a read for a bit before replacing things.
