Noticed there was liquid discharge from the battery vents. Voltage was high with car running so I assumed the regulator was toast. Just for kicks I read the factory service manual. It advised checking the voltage regulator for good, clean contact where it fastens to the car. There was a nice coat of paint under mine so I sanded it down to bare shiny metal and reinstalled. Charging voltage came down and no more mess!
