wouldn't you have to change the plate between the engine and transmission also? I found this out today while doing my AOD install. I put in my new flexplate and looked at the starter opening in the block plate and tried to line up the starter to the holes and it is way off. Glad I tried this before installing the tranny. I took out a 157 flywheel and put in a 164 to match the convertor for the aod.

before you pull the bell off.....take 1 bolt out of the bell(to the tranny) go to the hardware store and buy 4 bolts the same size (a little longer is ok) then cut the heads off of the bolts you just purchased. take a drimel and cut a slot in the top of the "headless" bolt(for a screw driver to fit). then put one of them on the hole were you removed the bolt leaving about 1/2 inch of the "headless" bolt sticking out, then take another bolt out and replace it with another "headless" bolt....continue the same with the other 2 remaining "headless" bolts. This will ensure that your pump does not spin on you. Been there, done that!
Then remove remaining bolts and slide the bellhousing off...and slide new bell on. Then repeat process...backwards :D

    I hope this makes since!

I've already switched bellhousings on this transmission once, how would I know if the pump spun?

From the front, by the input shaft? How did you line it back up?

yes leakage from the front....I did not line it back up...I screwed the bolts through the gaskets.....took it to a tranny shop and had it fixed.
If your tranny is old, there is a good chance it did not spin.....mine is fairly fresh and it did.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
If it did spin and you have already put the bell on, the damage is already done. I say go ahead and put everything back together and see...there is a chance it did not and you will be OK. you will know as soon as the converter starts spinning if it is OK or not.
I am not trying to scare you :evilsmile I was merely stating what happened to me in the past and the "safety measures" I have taken since to keep it from happening to me.

Mine is fairly fresh as well, but it has sat covered up for 4 months unused.

I pulled the bellhousing off of one of the transmissions in my buddy's yard. It is a RF-C50P-7976-A, which, according to the information I recently gleaned from a friend of mine who builds C4's, is a 157t housing, early model.

He told me there are two 157t housings, (the first four letters) C5OP and the D2OP, both will work for my application, but only one has some extra mounting holes for the TV/kickdown mounting.

Additionally, I found this website which lists the following info:

Year / Engine Size / Misc Info /Casting No. /OEM No.
    68-76
    / 302V8-50 / Case Fill, 2-Bolt Starter, 157 Tooth flywheel / C5OP-7976-A / C5OZ-7976-A

    72-76 / 302V8-50 /
    Case Fill, 2-Bolt Starter, 157 Tooth flywheel, Cable mount / D2OP-7976-AA / D2OZ-7976-B

I hope that helps more people later!
