Been reading around on past posts and like this idea before i paint my car. I just want to know from anyone who may know. How far back can you tuck in the large bumpers safely without interference with the rest of the car? what exactly am I modifying behind the bumpers? I thought I was just cutting and rewelding bumper mounts? i saw them do this on powerblocks musclecar a while back on a later model car, they had to modify the body panels. can the tuck be done without modding any of the car?
I cut my mounts 3.5"...should have cut them 3.25". When I bolted the bumper shell back on the car it bottomed out in the middle before I tighten the bolts. I had to add washers between the shell and brackets. I cut 1-3/4" from the rubber stone guard so it would be flush with the bumper shell then install the chrome. http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/maverick_8.html
thanks for the link, will help as a guide. i may just cut 3" to avoid any trouble. i have been using a wire wheel on my body and would like to sand blast as you did on your project. question for anybody who may know. ive been looking at a gravity feed spot blaster gun that just hooks up to your air compressor hose. heres a link to one. http://www.bowtiegarage.com.au/mage...0e43594a9c230972d/s/p/speed_blaster_lge_1.jpg can anyone recommend this over a welding wheel. i figure it has to be easier and faster but didn't know if that could handle large tasks? the grinder and welding wheel just takes far to long at removing.
I never used a sand blaster that small. It might run out of sand in about 10 seconds if that long...maybe 5 seconds. I have a store bought pressure pot blaster and a homemade blaster. well harbor freight sells them for $20 and sell a glass media. i figure i could at least get the hard to reach spaces with it but didn't know how well they remove.
i ended up buying a self feed blaster (put hose in bucket, hook up to our 15 gal compressor) to hook up to my air compressor, runs up to 125psi. tried sand, no luck (only worked on rust/paint). anything to use in these blasters to cut undercoat or thicker materials?
Absolutely. I'll see if I can get before and after pics. For no reason but stuopiditycani I get the pics up. Says I've already used them. Sorry. you will notice a big diference.

I moved slid the bumper back 2 and 3/8" but you can do as much as the others say I just picked that number. The difference is I Did not do anything to the origional mounts except drilled the same size holes father foward and put the bumper mounts back no cutting and welding.
yea, i was originally wanting to just move the mounts like you said. inspecting though my driver side mount is badly rusted. so i plan to remove and cut because ill need to re weld the mount anyway. did 2 3/8" give a noticable look?
I moved mine back 3 inches and everything worked out great. I unbolted the bumper from the suports and then unbolted the suports from the car. With the bracket in the vise, I sectioned the H beam suport by cutting 3 inches out and welding it back together. I marked the front valance before taking the bumper off and then cut it back so the bumper would just cover the leading edge when reinstalled. I moved the rear bumper in 1.5 inches also, but that was a little more chalenging because the mounts are different. You can see the beforew and after views in my images. I like the way it turned out.
